In late May, Microsoft entered a major carbon offtake agreement with Azuero Reforestación Colectiva (ARC) to restore 10,000 hectares of tropical forest on Panama’s Azuero Peninsula. Marking the company’s third long-term nature-based agreement in #reforestation, this initiative is expected to remove over 3 million tons of CO2 from the atmosphere, providing Microsoft with over 1 million carbon removal credits in the process. Microsoft will purchase around half of the #carboncredits generated by the Azuero project over its first 30 years, providing crucial upfront financing and supporting the engagement of two other investors, Rubicon Carbon and Carbon Streaming. ARC is one of the only six global carbon projects using Verra’s newest reforestation methodology and the only one selected to pilot Verra’s SD VISta Nature Credit framework. The project will replant 75 native species, restoring #biodiversity and expanding habitats for endangered species such as the Azuero spider monkey. It is also expected to deliver US $70 million in direct and indirect benefits to local communities, creating over 300 jobs and providing stable income to local landowners who participate in the project. Unlike typical investment timelines of 5 to 7 years, this 30-year commitment from Microsoft and its partners recognises the inherently slow carbon sequestration rate of reforestation projects, allowing saplings enough time to mature and more effectively capture CO2. https://lnkd.in/dzPeRFG8

This was a BIG #CDR deal. And an even bigger deal is that we have Microsoft and UPEnergy on this upcoming panel hosted by Sustainable Brands. If you’re exploring buying carbon credits, who better to learn from than industry leaders about how to make the right investment decisions that deliver impact far beyond carbon.
Carbon Streaming is proud to have been a part of one of the largest carbon removal deals to date with Microsoft, who has been blazing the trail for all carbon buyers, demonstrating the strongest due diligence and rigour in their carbon credit buying practices as highlighted in this article from GreenBiz Group on the Azuero Restoration Project in Panama. The project will replant 75 native species, expanding habitat for endangered species such as the Azuero spider monkey.?Over 100 local landowners will have the opportunity to participate in the project and receive compensation from its hybrid payment system, which combines both regular land-lease payments and a percentage of future #carboncredit sales. Annie Guo, Nature-based Solutions Lead, Carbon Removal at Microsoft will be joining us later this month on June 25th for a webinar on "Unlocking Impact: Key Considerations for Purchasing Carbon Credits to Maximize Community Engagement". Microsoft has announced one of the largest-ever carbon removal agreements to purchase 3 million tons of carbon removal credits over a 15-year period, generated through re.green’s reforestation projects in Brazil. This is re.green' s largest carbon removal (CDR) project to date. re.green will deliver approximately 3 million tons of carbon removal credits over a 15-year period through the restoration of forests using solely native species, encompassing the planting of at least 10.7 million seedlings. This offtake agreement will backstop the restoration of over 16,000 hectares across Brazil. https://lnkd.in/dSeR768T #naturebasedsolutions #carbonremoval

Microsoft have signed a deal with re.green for over 3 million metric tons of carbon removal credits over a 15-year period, moving the company closer to their goal becoming carbon negative by 2030. Re.green will be restoring an additional 17,500 hectares of the Amazon and Atlantic Forest, on top of 15,000 hectares from a previous deal with Microsoft. This native-species-led restoration work will not only sequester CO2 towards climate goals but will deliver a simultaneous ecological and biodiversity improvement by functionally reconnecting the landscape, allowing essential ecological processes to occur. Microsoft’s commitment to its voluntary targets shows there is increasing maturity in the offsetting market, and nature based solutions, which can deliver against carbon and biodiversity goals, are attractive to large corporations. If you'd like to find out how your business could use our high-integrity, voluntary biodiversity units to support nature recovery in England, get in touch in the comments! ?? #biodiversity #voluntarybng #naturerestoration #carboncredits

Congratulations to re.green for signing a $200 million deal with Microsoft to restore parts of Brazil’s Amazon and Atlantic forests! Seed-funded by Good Energies Foundation, re.green restores degraded land by planting native tree species, in projects financed through carbon credits and timber sales. This week’s major milestone announced at the World Economic Forum in #Davos shows that nature-related opportunities are increasingly becoming part of the broader risk management and valuation calculus for corporates. It also illustrates that natural ecosystem restoration is a tremendous, if not the largest scale and most cost-effective near-term opportunity for climate mitigation! Way to go as Microsoft’s carbon footprint in 2023, as highlighted in today’s Financial Times, was more than 17mn tonnes of CO?, a 40% increase compared with about 12mn tonnes in 2020. As the company wants to become #carbon negative by the end of this decade, carbon removal credits are a promising avenue. This week’s deal is also a testimony that Good Energies Foundation’s seed-funding of re.green in 2019 was not an act of charity, but rather a high-yielding investment into our planetary foundations! Our gratitude to re.green's visionary leadership, Thiago Picolo, Mariana Barbosa, Ana Luiza Squadri, and colleagues, for evidencing that #forest #carbon is becoming a tangible asset on corporate balance sheets. ????????

"SUEZ is delighted to provide Microsoft with a resilient and innovative carbon capture solution. We look forward to further enabling companies to drive their decarbonisation in line with our climate commitment in our Sustainable Development Roadmap.” Sabrina Soussan Yesterday at the #VivaTech event in Paris, industrial biochar producer Carbonity (a joint venture between SUEZ, Airex Energy & Gestion Rémabec Inc) and carbon asset manager First Climate announced the signing of a forward contract with Microsoft to issue and deliver 36,000 tonnes of carbon credits over the next three years. Biochar produced from residues has been identified by the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) as one of the best and most effective negative emissions technologies. Because of its size and the established companies that make up the joint venture, Carbonity is one of the few carbon removal projects in the world that can deliver large volumes of removal credits. #carbonemissions #carboncredits #biochar
