What does it mean to be a humanitarian in the age of the climate crisis?? ? It was inspiring to?learn?from experts and professionals at last week’s AidEx in Nairobi. They are confronted daily to the urgency of climate change that’s already affecting the region’s most vulnerable. ? Here are five things I shared about the way I believe we should rethink the humanitarian system to help tackle the climate emergency: ? The climate crisis represents an existential crisis for all of us, and as aid workers, we are on the frontlines to witness the increasing impact of more severe and frequent climate disasters on vulnerable communities. In 2020 alone, loss and damage from climate disasters exceeded $258 billion globally. That is more than the entire global annual aid budget. ? There is no greater challenge today than getting ahead of the climate crisis: however, it is not the only challenge we face as humanitarians. In the last decade alone,?humanitarian needs grew by over 330% as a result of multiplying conflicts, extreme poverty and growing global instability. ? We must become climate-smart and include climate action in all aspects of our programming, instead of creating new silos of “climate action’ or separate ‘climate responses’. This means better using climate data and forecasts, strengthening disaster preparedness and early action, and investing more in climate adaptation and resilience. This also means, of course, leading by example and reducing our carbon footprint. ? Ultimately, we cannot do this alone. Governments, regional bodies, financial institutions, and the private sector must step up. The climate financing gap is estimated at around $2.4 trillion per year. This figure no doubt seems very high. However, last year, the world spent $2.4 trillion in military and defense and another $7 trillion in direct and indirect fossil fuels subsidies. The money is there. It is simply not going to the right place. ? It is easy to become jaded when working in the aid world. I am not. I know that if we combine our efforts, we can move mountains. We have seen it time and time again when we thought everything was too tough. Thank you so much for hosting me. This kind of debates forces us to raise above the daily operational struggles and look beyond this year’s issues to think about how we can collectively improve the sustainability and impact of our work. #AidExNairobi #climatecrisis AidEx - The Global Humanitarian Aid Event

The climate emergency is a humanitarian crisis. Climate change is a top driver of #humanitarian need and human suffering, particularly for the poorest. Climate-related disasters are driving increased levels of risks, #vulnerability human rights abuses, disrupting livelihoods, increasing #displacement, influencing the spread of diseases, worsening global public health and threatening lives overall. “#Humanitarian aid can only be a temporary band-aid – and a woefully small one at that. Leaders around the world need to take smarter, innovative decisions and make smarter #investments today for the benefit of the future. These investments among others ranges from: (i)?????????????#scale up #adaptation finance to prevent, prepare for, and respond to growing humanitarian crises, and to make communities more #resilient. (ii)????????????continue to scale up investment in #preparedness, #anticipatory action and #earlywarning and #resilience-building strategies. Many countries are getting better at responding to climate-related disasters; the number of people killed by #disasters globally has steadily declined. (iii)??????????leaps forward in #science and #technology continue to improve #predictions of climate-related crises, shaping #anticipatory actions and allowing faster action when disaster is about to strike. (iv)??????????the most #vulnerable countries need greater access to contingency finance and insurance for rapid #response and #recovery at a larger scale. (v)????????????overlapping vulnerabilities need to be reflected in the operations of international financial institutions. Lastly, the growing humanitarian #climateemergency requires significant investment in humanitarian programmes that boost the #resilience and #adaptative capacities of vulnerable communities and ensure they receive #climateadaptation funds to manage the risks they face. #climateemergency #humanitariancrisis

Navigating the Intersection of Humanitarian Action and Climate Change in Kenya In Kenya, the convergence of humanitarian action and climate change presents a formidable challenge, akin to navigating between rocks amidst turbulent waters. The reality of climate change is no longer distant but harshly evident in erratic weather patterns, prolonged droughts, flash floods, and other extreme events, particularly impacting vulnerable communities in arid and semi-arid regions. According to recent reports from the [World Bank](https://www.worldbank.org/), Kenya has experienced significant economic loss and damage due to climate-related disasters in the past decade, estimated at billions of dollars. These losses include damage to infrastructure, loss of agricultural productivity, and impacts on human health and well-being. The arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs) are among the most affected, facing recurrent droughts and desertification, exacerbating poverty and food insecurity. Vulnerable communities in arid and semi-arid regions, such as the ASALs, are disproportionately affected by climate change. Recurrent droughts and desertification in these areas exacerbate poverty and food insecurity, pushing communities further into vulnerability. Despite these challenges, the humanitarian system in Kenya, while dedicated and resilient, often finds itself overwhelmed and under-resourced in the face of mounting crises. Limited funding, inadequate infrastructure, and fragmented coordination exacerbate the challenges of delivering timely assistance to those in need. While various government initiatives aim to address climate-related emergencies, the response has been largely ad hoc and reactive, lacking a comprehensive, long-term strategy. To address these pressing challenges, a paradigm shift is needed towards proactive, multi-stakeholder approaches. This includes investing in community-based resilience-building initiatives, enhancing the capacity and coordination of humanitarian actors, integrating climate change considerations into development planning, strengthening partnerships with regional and international actors, and promoting sustainable development practices. Experts and advisors emphasize the importance of proactive, multi-stakeholder approaches to address the challenges posed by climate change and humanitarian crises. Collaboration between government agencies, humanitarian actors, civil society organizations, and international partners is crucial to implementing holistic solutions.

Anticipatory action can better prepare displaced and other vulnerable populations for climate shocks in fragile and conflict contexts and reduce the humanitarian impacts. However, this approach is currently under-funded, say British Red Cross's Adeline Siffert & Joanna Moore and Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre's Evan Easton-Calabria & Eddie Wasswa Jjemba. Climate change has intensified the severity of natural disasters, displacing millions worldwide and exacerbating existing social and economic inequalities. As we observe World Refugee Day (20th June) and the UK’s Refugee Week (17th to 23rd June), a time dedicated to celebrating the strength and resilience of refugees, it is crucial to reflect on the profound implications of climate change in displacing communities. People living in marginalised communities are often the most affected by climate-related disasters, facing limited access to resources, inadequate infrastructure, and social exclusion, which makes them more susceptible to the impacts of the climate crisis. The repercussions of our actions, or lack thereof, reverberate across continents, affecting the lives of countless individuals and communities. The need for concerted global action on climate change mitigation, adaptation, and humanitarian responses has never been more pressing. The writing is on the wall. The impacts of climate shocks are already being felt. And unfortunately, it’s refugees and those that have been forced to flee that feel them most. We can avoid climate crisis worst-case scenarios. But we need to scale-up and direct climate finance and action to reach those in greatest need. That's why we're launching the UNHCR Climate Resilience Fund today. This fund will be critical to advance inclusion and support to refugees, host communities and countries of origin hardest hit by the climate emergency by strengthening protection, preparedness, and resilience. https://lnkd.in/eR_izpre

The climate crisis is a human crisis. The convergence of both is driving displacement and increasing the vulnerability of those already forced to flee. As a response UNHCR has launched the Climate Resilience Fund which aims to ensure that forcibly displaced people fleeing from or living in climate-vulnerable countries are #protected from and #resilient to the impact of #climatechange. Working on the launch of the Fund has been an enriching experience and once again proved the importance of climate finance and financing mechanisms that prioritize sustainability and the building of a climate-resilient world. #withrefugees #climateresiliencefund

#Climatechange will force more population into climate related displacement in the coming years if action is not taken now. More than anything, it will have a direct impact on already distressed #refugees. UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency 's initiative will be a good step to mitigate some of the problems faced by these vulnerable groups. #climateaction #ActNow #takeactionnow #climateemergency #displacement #migration #SunshineSG

?? Just released a new FAO-UNHCR?issue brief?highlighting the complex interplay between access to natural resources, environmental degradation, climate vulnerability, social cohesion – especially in contexts of protecting forcibly displaced people and host communities. ?? With over?122.6 million people displaced worldwide, the pressure on fragile ecosystems and their communities is often exacerbated. Forests often act as a lifeline in such settings, offering resources for cooking, shelter, and income. However, without proper management, this dependency can lead to environmental degradation. I enjoyed contributing to this FAO-UNHCR joint issue brief on sustainable forest management as a means to enhance self-reliance and promote climate resilience in displacement settings. The brief provides practical guidance in five key areas: 1. Encourage innovation and good practices to build livelihood and climate resilience; 2. Enhance safe energy access through clean and efficient technologies; 3. Encourage social and behaviour change strategies and inclusivity; 4. Advocate for integrated and inclusive national responses; and 5. Mainstream a climate-resilient, people-centred approach. https://lnkd.in/dkemMqKA
