#PrideMonth and fashion share a deep and evolving relationship. Fashion has become a prominent medium for individuals to express their identities, including their gender identity and sexual orientation, especially during Pride Month. Here's how they intersect: #VisibilityandRepresentation Pride Month celebrates LGBTQ+ identities, history, and rights. Fashion allows individuals to visually represent and celebrate their identities, whether through rainbow-themed clothing, accessories, or explicitly LGBTQ+ branded apparel. This visibility helps to normalize LGBTQ+ experiences and foster a sense of community. #SelfExpression Fashion is a form of self-expression, and during Pride Month, it serves as a powerful tool for LGBTQ+ individuals to express their authentic selves. Whether it's through bold and vibrant outfits, gender-nonconforming styles, or statement pieces that reflect personal identity, fashion allows people to showcase their pride and confidence. #ActivismandAwareness Fashion can also be a means of activism and raising awareness during Pride Month. Many brands release special collections or collaborate with LGBTQ+ artists and designers, with a portion of proceeds often going to LGBTQ+ charities and organizations. These collaborations not only support the community but also amplify important messages of inclusivity and equality. Inclusivity in the Fashion Industry: Pride Month prompts discussions about inclusivity within the fashion industry itself. It encourages brands to reflect on their practices, diversity in representation, and inclusion both in their designs and behind the scenes. This can lead to greater representation of LGBTQ+ models, designers, and influencers, fostering a more inclusive and diverse industry. #ChallengesandCritiques Despite progress, there are also challenges and critiques within the intersection of Pride Month and fashion. Some argue that the commercialization of Pride by mainstream fashion brands can lead to pinkwashing or the exploitation of LGBTQ+ identities for profit, without meaningful support for the community beyond the month of June. Others emphasize the importance of intersectionality, highlighting the need for inclusivity that acknowledges the diversity of experiences within the LGBTQ+ community, including those of people of color, trans individuals, and other marginalized groups. Overall, the relationship between Pride Month and fashion is multifaceted, encompassing celebration, activism, representation, and challenges. It reflects the ongoing journey towards greater visibility, acceptance, and equality for LGBTQ+ individuals within both the fashion industry and society as a whole. https://lnkd.in/gqqnShz9

?? Empowering Change Through Adaptive Fashion ?? “In a world not designed for us, we must speak up, push boundaries, and create the change we want to see.” I recently had the privilege of interviewing the incredible Victoria Jenkins, founder of the award-winning adaptive fashion brand Unhidden, a TEDx speaker, disability advocate, and one of the most influential disabled people in the UK as recognized by the Shaw Trust. Victoria’s journey from a 16-year career in the fashion industry, including working with brands like Victoria Beckham, to founding Unhidden in 2016 is nothing short of inspiring. Her lived experience with chronic illness and disability fueled her mission to design clothing that restores dignity, independence, and style to an often-overlooked community. ?? Key Highlights from the interview: ?? The misconceptions about adaptive fashion—how the market isn’t “small” and how thoughtful design doesn’t have to be expensive. ?? Innovative solutions Unhidden has introduced, such as pockets designed for feeding tubes and tailored looks with elastic waistbands for comfort. ?? Challenges and progress in disability representation within the fashion industry, and how advocacy work can feel isolating but remains vital. ?? The importance of universal design, inclusive representation, and why collaboration with non-disabled allies is key to driving change. Victoria’s work has been recognized by Vogue, celebrated on Dragon’s Den, and showcased at London Fashion Week, and she continues to push boundaries through her partnership with Primark to launch an adaptive fashion collection. She’s shaping not just the future of inclusive fashion but also the next generation of changemakers through initiatives like the V&A Innovate Challenge. ?? As Victoria says, “Choice is still what’s missing in adaptive fashion, and we need more designers in this space to ensure everyone can shop in a way that reflects their own style and identity.” ?? If you’re inspired by her story and work, be sure to check out Unhidden and follow Victoria’s journey. Together, we can create a world where inclusion is not an exception but the standard. ?? Exciting insights for luxury fashion brands ?? We are delighted to share our recently published paper in the Journal of Business Research, entitled "The thousand faces of beauty: How credible storytelling unlocks disability representation in inclusive luxury fashion branding". In this article, Sharifah Alwi, Rossella Gambetti and I discuss how luxury brands signal their inclusivity via disability inclusion. We develop a conceptual model to examine the effect of perceived brand inclusivity in the luxury sector. While luxury has always been associated with aspiration, stereotypical beauty, and exclusivity, can it really be inclusive? If so, what are the mechanisms that drive this relationship? ??? Inspired by examples from luxury brands like Gucci, who first endorsed a model with Down Syndrome in their campaigns, and British Vogue’s historic edition on disabled talent in the industry, our research delves deep into these questions. ???♀????♂? ? Our study reveals that despite a surprising negative direct relationship between perceived brand inclusivity and consumers’ willingness to buy, this flips to a positive effect through powerful storytelling and credibility, which speak to the authenticity of the action. ???? ? This research extends the existing literature on inclusive advertising in luxury fashion by going beyond dominant manifestations of inclusivity, such as feminism and LGBTQAI+ rights. It highlights new opportunities for brands to signal their responsibility and openness to embracing consumer dignity. ???? Special thanks to our senior AE and reviewers for their constructive feedback to improve our paper. And to my wonderful team who keep pushing one another to be better despite initial setbacks...so happy to be able to share this work and our journey ?? . Just A Thought….. While it's true that some fashion brands might use inclusivity primarily as a marketing strategy to tap into new customer bases and enhance their public image, it's important to consider the broader context and potential benefits: 1. **Increased Visibility**: Even if the initial motivation is financial, featuring models with disabilities increases visibility and representation. This can have a positive impact by normalizing diverse bodies and abilities in mainstream media. 2. **Consumer Awareness**: Brands that embrace inclusive fashion, even for profit-driven reasons, can raise awareness among consumers about the importance of diversity. This can drive demand for more inclusive practices across the industry. 3. **Industry Standards**: When major brands adopt inclusive practices, it can set new standards within the fashion industry. Competitors may follow suit, leading to wider changes that benefit people with disabilities. 4. **Dialogue and Advocacy**: The inclusion of models with disabilities, regardless of motivation, sparks conversations about representation, accessibility, and the need for more inclusive practices. This dialogue can lead to meaningful advocacy and change. 5. **Empowerment and Opportunity**: Models with disabilities gain valuable opportunities and visibility, which can help them build their careers and inspire others. This can have a ripple effect, encouraging more people with disabilities to pursue careers in fashion and related fields. 6. **Critical Examination**: Public and media scrutiny of brands' motivations can push companies to adopt more genuine, long-term commitments to inclusivity. Consumers today are savvy and often demand authenticity from the brands they support. While it's important to critically assess the motivations behind inclusive practices, the outcomes can still contribute to positive change. Encouraging authenticity and holding brands accountable ensures that inclusivity becomes more than just a marketing strategy and leads to genuine, lasting improvements in representation and accessibility. #InclusiveFashion #RepresentationMatters #HoldBrandsAccountable #FashionForAll
