Construction will be booming in the US for two cities with the United States hosting two Olympic games in the next decade - LA 2028 & Salt Lake 2034. For an estimation of costs and material requirements, Paris 2024 is our best example of what we can expect here. World sporting events are becoming more common in the USA. F-1 racing and the World Cup were two major sports that captivated the world but we mostly stayed out of. Now major US cities are vying to build new stadiums, new raceways, and host new teams. New York and New Jersey are definitely thinking of the future of sport. And with New Jersey set to host the World Cup final in 2026, expect to see a lot more soccer fever and arena construction in the US. It would bring: ? ￡7.3bn a year regeneration of the area for the UK economy ? 92k new jobs? ? 17k new homes ? a potential 1.8m visitors a year ? The case in Italy In Milan, AC Milan and FC Internazionale Milano have been talking about building their stadium since 2019. This indecision is a problem for the clubs, the city (and the fans). AS Roma has been working on it for years but we still don't know if and when a new stadium will be built. ?? I don't know if studies like the one commissioned by Manchester United have been done, but it would help all stakeholders understand what it means to have a brand-new stadium. ? Thoughts A new stadium can change the face of a city. ?? It brings jobs, tourism, prestige... and a desire to win. Seeing a match in a comfortable, beautiful, organized stadium where you can get in and out quickly is such a better experience. Saudi Arabia's plans to build 11 new stadiums and refurbish four existing ones as part of its 2034 World Cup bid (for which it is the only bidder) have been unveiled. The stadiums look exciting and have a cutting edge design. But serious questions remain about whether or not Saudi Arabia should be allowed to host the event in light of the country's poor human rights record and the likelihood that the construction of the stadiums may involve forced or abused labour. Amnesty International's Stephen Cockburn has been heavily critical of the Saudi bid, arguing that the Cup could be blighted by 'forced labour, repression and discrimination' and that its response to human rights issues in its bid falls well short of the World Cup's standards. The easiest way to deliver a 'National Stadium' is to simply re-zone the lamd surrounding Eden Park 500m in each direction to mixed use commercial/residential, take away the noise limits and buy some of that land near the stadium for public use.? Some more funding could go into upgrading the train and bus links. Finally cricket should not be played there.? The national cricket stadium should be in Cristchurch - Hagley Oval.? Increase seating there and in Hamilton, Napier and put $200 million into rebuilding North Harbour Stadium into a world-class one-day, Twenty20 and Test cricket ground by 2030.? An all-purpose stadium is a bad idea.? It is sub-standard for all uses.? Using Eden Park and Haglwy Oval/North Shore Stadium means more of the money can be spent on transport upgrades.
