Today CASPA held the Third ICS Roundtable: Next Steps in Building Health and Care Data Interoperability. The roundtable provided an update on the NHS Transformation Directorate’s Social Care Interoperability Platform (SCIP), as well as contributions from the CASPA Board and speakers. CASPA has been engaging with a number of ICSs over previous months and has had many positive conversations on the benefits of sensitive social care digitisation. CASPA has also held two previous virtual roundtables on the subject of effective approaches for social care data sharing, both of which received positive feedback. #DataInteroperability #DataStandards #DigitalStandards

Lord Darzi's report is published today. He was commissioned by DHSC to conduct an "immediate and independent" investigation of the NHS. His conclusion is that the NHS is in "serious trouble". There will be a 10 year health plan forthcoming which will focus on the following: * Re-engage staff and re-empower patients. * Lock in the shift of care closer to home by hardwiring financial flows. * Simplify and innovate care delivery for a neighbourhood NHS. * Drive productivity in hospitals. * Tilt towards technology. * Contribute to the nation’s prosperity. * Reform to make the structure deliver.

It used to be said the NHS runs off the goodwill of its staff - it now appears to run off the goodwill of its patients. Lord Darzi’s report has revealed an NHS in urgent need of reform - long waits and poor outcomes, crumbling infrastructure and outdated IT, burnt-out and striking staff, and record low rates of public satisfaction. The temptation is to ask for more money, but the NHS has never had more money and staff than it does now (outside of covid). We need to work out how to use that funding more effectively - and to do that we need data. TBI are advocating for two big changes to the way we use data in the NHS: - a National Data Trust to support R&D in the UK, and - a Digital Health Record to support direct patient care. The UK faces a choice at this juncture: prepare the NHS for this new digital future or prepare to lose the NHS. Tony Blair Institute for Global Change

It’s inspiring to see this inclusive approach to shaping our healthcare future. NHS IT systems are in the news today. Often the butt of jokes about NHS infrastructure, today's story highlights the serious consequences when IT doesn't support staff to do their job. In 2022, we surveyed nearly 1,400 healthcare professionals to find out their attitudes to shared decision making. Largely supportive of working with and supporting patients to play an active role in decisions about treatment, respondents to our survey highlighted how poor NHS IT undermined their attempts to work in partnership with patients. Why is frontline digitisation so important? Quality frontline digitisation can help refine care pathways and increase productivity, easing burdens on acute, community, ambulance and mental health trusts - and help flow across systems. Frontline digitisation includes the rollout of electronic patient record (EPR) systems to drive better quality care, increase efficiency and support the transformation of modern services.
