This Mental Health Awareness week, I wanted to talk about a profession I've had a lot of interaction with recently: vets. (Including all in veterinary medicine, receptionists, technicians, nurses and more). Colleagues know my two cats are part of my family and when an apparently routine test found that one of them had a catalogue of very serious undetected problems, and further tests were confusing and inconclusive at first, it was emotionally intense - to say the least. Through referrals, retests, weekly visits, a LOT of money and, at last, treatment (she's doing well), I thankfully remembered to be polite and keep my cool. I also fell back on a bad habit of doomscrolling, and was shocked but not surprised to find out about NOMV (Not One More Vet) and the serious mental health crisis in vet medicine. Sadly, when pets aren't well and emotions and bills are running high, not everyone is being their best selves with their vet teams. There are other factors to the crisis, but the tips from NOMV near the bottom of this page are great, and so easy for vet clients to enact. Saying thank you to everyone at your vets' practice, sending a card to anyone whose work has made a big difference, following your practice's preferred method of refilling prescriptions...these and other tiny good behaviours could make all the difference. Today, let’s celebrate the incredible individuals who dedicate their lives to caring for our beloved pets (technically it was earlier this week, but really, we can do this any day). But let’s also take a moment to acknowledge the immense challenges they face — ones we don’t often see. Veterinary professionals walk a delicate line every day. They shoulder the responsibility of life-and-death decisions, often beating themselves up over the “what-ifs.” They face judgment when they prioritize a pet’s immediate needs over rigid protocols, even when their intentions are to do what’s best. And then there’s the emotional toll: ?????? Compassion fatigue from giving their all to animals in need, only to feel like it’s never enough. ?????? Verbal abuse from pet owners overwhelmed by grief or frustration. ?????? Burnout from being caregivers, problem-solvers, and emotional support systems — all rolled into one. These are the unsung heroes of pet care. They care deeply, sometimes to the point where their own mental health suffers. ?? How can we help? ?? Practice patience when discussing your pet’s care; remember, they want the best for your companion too. ?? Offer gratitude — even a simple “thank you” can go a long way. ?? Show understanding for their tough decisions; they’re human, navigating complex emotions and situations just like us. ?? Advocate for mental health support in the veterinary field, because these incredible individuals deserve the same care they give our pets. Celebrating 10 years in business! I’ve been told it’s a time to reflect, 10 years is a long time! We’ve achieved so much - a few refurbs, a huge extension, 400% increase in staff, too many new pieces of equipment to even think of and a business that’s still true to its values, as it was the day we opened - A true independent small animal practice, where our vets are free to be vets and our nurses get to be nurses (obvious, yet not always common practice!). Have we had our ups and downs - of course! We’re two qualified RVNs owning and running a vet practice - it still shocks me how many people (mainly professional) that can’t get their head around this fact. I hate the question ‘would you do it again/what would you do different?’ Of course I’d do it again! And honestly nothing - Mistakes are normal, we’re all human and that’s how we learn. We’ve listened, changed, adapted and remained focused. It’s the only way to keep your business current and striving forward. So, here’s to the next chapter of Seaham Veterinary Centre. Would you Give your Dog an Anti-Aging Pill? A longevity tablet for dogs is currently entering trial phases. This promising research is conducted by the veterinary medicine startup, Loyal, which is exploring ways to potentially extend the lives of our aging canine companions. The study, known as the STAY study, plans to enroll over 1,000 aging dogs from across the U.S. to evaluate the effectiveness of their new drug, LOY-002. The goal is to discover if this treatment can indeed help our dogs live longer and healthier lives by at least an extra year. The once-daily chewable tablet is designed to be a treat, infused with a beef-like, savory flavor. It's part of an ongoing effort to make advanced health treatments accessible and affordable for pet guardians, without the need for insurance. While the study will take four years to complete, with hopes for FDA approval for early access by 2025, it's too early to tell the outcome.
