?? What caught my attention at IFA? After attending a panel and a start-up pitch event, here are the discussions that really stood out to me: 1?? AI for Local Empowerment and Inclusive Digitization I was intrigued by the focus on AI solutions that engage directly with communities. For example, an academic project in Togo is leveraging AI-driven weather stations to help local farmers optimize their crops. This trend reflects a broader movement to make digital tools more inclusive by supporting local languages and fostering real community involvement. 2?? Applying AI Where It Matters Most A powerful shift I noticed was the emphasis on deploying AI in areas with the greatest potential for impact, such as reducing CO2 emissions in the shipping industry. It’s about using AI to address significant challenges and deliver both economic and sustainable benefits. 3?? Practical AI for Everyday Life I was drawn to innovations that make AI part of our daily routines — from tools that help care for pets and plants to portable personal assistants for everyday tasks. The focus is on seamless integration and adding real value to our lives. ? My biggest takeaway? ?? The 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, High-Level General Debate AI & AMR ?? This year’s assembly is a critical moment for global diplomacy, with discussions focused on key international issues like peace, security, artificial intelligence (AI), climate change, and sustainable development. ?? AI is a central theme this year, as nations explore how emerging technologies can shape the future of global economies, security, and ethical governance. The responsible development and regulation of AI are now high on the agenda, with leaders seeking to balance innovation with safety and privacy. ?? Another pressing issue is antimicrobial resistance (AMR). On Thursday, September 26, the UN will hold a High-Level Meeting addressing this growing global health challenge. AMR occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites evolve to resist the effects of antimicrobial medicines, making infections harder to treat and increasing the risk of disease spread, severe illness, and death. ?? The intersection of AI and healthcare is also being discussed. AI has the potential to revolutionize the way we detect, manage, and treat AMR, from developing new diagnostic tools to optimizing the use of existing medicines. The integration of AI in combating AMR is one of the innovative solutions the assembly aims to explore. ?? AMR already causes over 1.27 million deaths annually, and by 2050, drug-resistant infections could claim 10 million lives per year if not addressed. This makes the 26th of September a critical day, as global leaders work together to find solutions. ?? AI’s role in reshaping health policies, as well as addressing challenges like AMR, highlights the importance of global cooperation in both technological and medical fields. Addressing Human Biases with AI: Dr. Austin-Williams urged the audience to use AI to uncover and mitigate their own biases. She shared research on scholarship applications, revealing how word choices influenced decisions. She demonstrated a “bias preventor” tool that helps identify and counteract these biases, promoting equitable outcomes. 2. Responsible AI Usage: Dr. Austin-Williams described Deloitte’s Trustworthy AI Framework, which encompasses several key principles to ensure AI technologies are developed and deployed ethically and effectively, including: - Fairness and Impartiality: Ensuring that AI models and data are representative of the diverse communities they serve. This involves actively identifying and mitigating biases in data collection and algorithm design to avoid exacerbating existing inequalities. - Transparency and Explainability: Prioritizing making AI processes and decisions understandable. This includes developing models that can clearly explain their decision-making processes, allowing stakeholders to trust and comprehend how outcomes are derived. - Responsibility and Accountability: Establishing clear guidelines on accountability for AI systems. Defining roles and responsibilities to address any negative impacts from AI use, ensuring there is a plan for managing and rectifying issues. - Robustness and Reliability: Focusing on the reliability of AI models by continuously testing and updating them to reflect real-world scenarios. This includes stress-testing AI systems to ensure they perform accurately under various conditions and maintaining their effectiveness over time. - Privacy and Security: Committing to protecting the privacy and security of data used in AI systems involves implementing stringent data protection measures and ensuring that data usage aligns with the original consent given by individuals, preventing unauthorized access or misuse. 3. AI for the SDGs:?Dr. Austin-Williams concluded her presentation with specific examples of ways Deloitte is currently using AI for sustainable development progress. - Malaria Control: Deloitte developed an AI virtual assistant for the Global Fund, aiding in data analysis and evidence-based decision-making to combat malaria. - Deforestation Prevention: Collaborating with WWF, Deloitte created a predictive model to detect and prevent illegal deforestation, with successful deployments in Indonesia. - Subsidy Allocation for Farmers: An AI chatbot helps Dutch farmers navigate complex subsidy landscapes, promoting sustainable agriculture.
