As an avid reader of the AFR's Rear Window column I followed Joe Aston's in depth reporting on Qantas and the various issues surrounding Alan Joyce's final few years at the helm. Accordingly, Joe's book "The Chairman's Lounge: The inside story of how Qantas sold us out" was required summer holiday reading for me. I found this book to be a fascinating insight into Australian corporate governance through the lens of Qantas. The book offers remarkable insights into the dynamics of corporate leadership, board relationships, and the intersection of business and politics. Aston brings his signature analytical style to examining the airline's recent history, particularly during the challenging Covid period. There was a bit of initial criticism (from our Prime Minister to name one) about bias and conflict of interest, however, from page 1 Joe sets out his past working at Qantas and that he approached Alan Joyce for interviews which were declined. Alan's response is printed at the start of the book (with his consent). I consider the book to take a very balanced approach to complex industry issues, from regulatory oversight to customer service challenges. Aston weaves together serious business analysis with engaging storytelling, making corporate governance accessible and at times entertaining. For those who are used to the sharp and punchy style of the Rear Window column, and looking for an easy-breezy read, it is worth noting this more in-depth analysis does justice to what is a very meaty topic and the initial chapters are thorough in establishing the background. It is well worthwhile approaching this book with the mindset of digesting a complex analysis and not in expectation of perusing a 5 minute column read. I highly recommended this book to anyone interested in Australian business leadership, corporate governance, or the aviation industry.
