At Google, we are passionate about productivity. We build AI tools to make everything faster, smarter, and ROI-exciting — but apparently, our productivity passion extends to, well... every corner of life. Case in point: this week, in our Warsaw office I stumbled upon Learning on the Loo project. Yep, it’s exactly what it sounds like — a series of A4 sheets with tips and tricks, conveniently placed in strategic restroom locations. Productivity literally follows you everywhere. This week’s topic? The art of saying no. Which is funny because I’ve been meaning to write about this for ages—but of course, I kept saying 'yes' to other things instead. So there it was, inspiration staring me right in the face. We hear a lot about grabbing opportunities, seizing the moment, and saying 'yes' to exciting new adventures. But honestly? In my professional life I’ve found that knowing when to say 'no' is just as crucial. Maybe even more. It all starts with knowing what each of us actually wants — whether that’s climbing the corporate ladder, launching your own business, spending more time with family, or embracing a role with complete freedom. Whatever our own North Star is, every 'yes' should pull us closer to it. And every 'no' should protect us from shiny distractions pulling off course. Of course, this is easier said than done. But every time a shining opportunity pops up, I run it through my own internal filter. And the result? I say 'no' to at least 90% of them, instead waiting for or actively creating the 10% that truly align with my goals. And no, I won’t be sharing a photo of Learning on the Loo — some things are better left to the imagination ?? Covid taught us one thing: most of our work can be done remotely. And with technology, we have the tools to connect and collaborate. But I still feel there is something more nuanced when we meet in person. So what is missing? I recently experienced the "Google Starline," and it blew me away. Although I knew the session was virtual, the projection made it feel as if the person was right there with me. Computer vision and advanced 3D technologies are racing to redefine our virtual experiences. In the next few years, we will undoubtedly use newer hardware and software solutions that transform how we work, ushering in an era of collaborative, globally distributed teams. If you haven't heard of Google Starline, here’s what Google says about it: "Through the years, we’ve built products to help people feel more connected. We’ve simplified email with Gmail, and made it easier to share what matters with Google Photos and be more productive with Google Meet. But while there have been advances in these and other communications tools over the years, they're all a far cry from actually sitting down and talking face to face. We asked ourselves: could we use technology to create the feeling of being together with someone, just like they're actually there? To solve this challenge, we’ve been working for a few years on Project Starline — a technology project that combines advances in hardware and software to enable friends, families and co-workers to feel together, even when they're cities (or countries) apart. To make this experience possible, we are applying research in computer vision, machine learning, spatial audio and real-time compression. The effect is the feeling of a person sitting just across from you, like they are right there." Project Starline is still in its early stages, available in a few Google offices with specialized equipment.
