Kent Beck's writing emphasizes the social nature of software engineering, which has significantly impacted the way I think about building a product. In a recent talk about increasing team velocity while improving quality, this quote of Kent's hit me: “I could be bad enough as an engineer to make sure that projects failed, but I couldn't be good enough as an engineer to make sure that projects succeeded.” The quote summarizes one reason I've come to focus more on becoming an effective leader instead of trying to be the best engineer. Championing the good ideas of others—usually better than mine anyway—helps great engineers be effective in a socio-technical organism (a.k.a. company). Sheila chilonga while making a profit is key to the survival of any business, setting it as a primary goal (Focus) can prove to be the opposite over the long term. Mining and manufacturing generally speaking has 4 focus areas: 1. Production 2. Safety 3. Profit (Return On Investment - RIO) 4. Quality Focus on production - workers tend to rush and take short cuts to meet targets often resulting in an increase of safety related incidents of a more severe nature. Any production gains and RIO will be lost due to safety related production downtime. Focus on safety - Overzealous safety systems tend to become difficult or time consuming to implement resulting in lost production. Focus on ROI (Profit) - Cost cutting and obsession with the bottom line, something bean counters are guilty of, leads to the use of inferior products, lack of training, reduction in essential stock and material holding, etc. ROI will tend be high for the short term, but due to penny pinching the workforce becomes disenfranchised and employee retention become poor eroding the skills of the work group which will slow production, increase safety related incidents, etc. Focusing on QUALITY is the only area that will improve and sustain all other focus areas. You can't produce quality by rushing, taking short cuts, using substandard practices, poorly trained personnel, etc. If we apply quality to all aspects and systems of work, the organization will reap long term benefits across all fronts, including profit.
