I love this. I am blessed to say I have 3 'move the body' friends! Two from secondary school days and one from uni. Almost 40 years of friendship - wow. My wonderful Reiki Master Alvagh Cronin talks about garden fence friends, kitchen table friends and fireside friends. You may only have 1-2 people who get to the fireside, and that's ok.? With emotional eating and binge eating comes a lot of social isolation, for several reasons: - avoiding/cancelling events that involve food or eating. - keeping a distance because of secrecy and shame about eating behaviours - in particular not getting romantically involved with others. - keeping folks at a distance because trust is difficult, this will often go back to trauma or adverse childhood experience. Social isolation, shame or loneliness are all triggers for emotional or binge eating. So it's a vicious chicken and egg cycle. When working with clients who struggle with emotional or binge eating, exploring friendships and connections is a key piece of work. As with so much of this fascinating work, we don't focus on the food, we focus on the person.? 1. Ask about friendships. Use the garden fence/kitchen table/fireside analogy to explore your client's support network. 2. Encourage your client to reach out to friends they miss or have become distant from. One person at a time, rebuilding connections slowly. 3. Ask if anyone knows about your client's relationship with food. If not, gently explore who might be a safe support person - friend or family member. Check that person will listen and understand, and not offer unhelpful advice about eg diets or weight loss. 4. Rehearse what to say, and what to ask for as support ie 'If I'm feeling wobbly can I call you? Or 'Can we go for a walk 1-2 times a week and just chat?' Clients telling someone, and asking for support can often be a huge relief. If they are not ready for that, just improving their connections to others is helpful as a starting point. Emotional and binge eating is not about food, it's about feelings.

Here are a few lessons I've learned from them: 1. **Cherish Family**: Grandparents teach us the importance of family. They remind us to stay close to our loved ones and support each other. 2. **Value of Time**: Time spent together is precious. Whether it's cooking, playing games, or just talking, these moments create lasting memories. 3. **Wisdom of Experience**: They have lived through many challenges and successes. Listening to their stories can teach us valuable life lessons that we can apply today. 4. **Embrace Simplicity**: Sometimes, the simplest activities bring the most joy. A walk in the park or a cup of tea can be magical when shared with someone special. Let’s take the time to create more memories with our grandparents. I always find people to be interesting. I think of something I notice every four years. When someone's person wins there is always the gloating, saying how proud they are and then the calls for unity. The person who loses, their supporters react how people who lose often react, usually not well. And four years later when the other side wins and the other loses, you have the same reactions, opposite sides, of course. I suppose I find it all rather convenient and incredulous. Sometimes, I really like being the outlier. I go into it knowing I'm never gonna win and never had a chance to begin with. I have no dog in the fight but believe in other options. But no matter what the result is, it never changes how I treat people or who I have in my life. We say we want people to consider our feelings and see things from our perspective but we are never willing to do the same. We say we want better and want unity, but only when it's on our own terms and convenient for us. By the way, I realize this does not pertain to all people and thank you to those on both sides who have been kind, reflective and hope for the best. As an outlier, I can only hope this, remember how you feel and want to be treated today and when the roles are reversed and they will be one day, have that same kindness and grace you ask for now. I also echo those sentiments. But when I reflect deeply, ?? I wonder, Appa: Is it fair to put you on this massive, illusory pedestal? Am I taking away your basic right to be a simple human, with all the emotions and flaws that come with it? ??♂? But here's what I really want to say: Appa, you weren't some larger-than-life character from a comic book, you were something even better - you were real. ??♂? As a simple human, you sometimes worried, feared, and maybe even cried. You weren't perfect, you made mistakes, you forgot things. But you were always there, laughing with me, losing at games (maybe on purpose!), picking me up when I fell. ?? As a kid, I also fell into an illusory superhero trap. But now, I get it. ?? You deserved the chance to be human, to experience life's ups and downs, just like anyone else. ??
