Ever wondered how Amnesty grows its #membership base and #community of people who believe in the fight for human rights? Our expert Membership Officer?Jan Bosch gives an insight into his role?? ??What is your role, and what does it involve??? As the Membership Officer, I’m the main point of contact for our members. My days are spent making sure we have lots of new members and lots of new supporters that join the 10 million others who fight for human rights. I look after much of the communication to members and supporters. Amnesty.ie/join if you want to do me a solid!? ? ??What is your favourite part about working at Amnesty??? It’s not just about the big victories, but also the small victories, the tiny victories that make a difference to the fight for the rights of human beings everywhere. Inch by inch successes that have been decades in the making. ? ? ??What has been your favourite campaign to work on? ? I realised very early on when I joined Amnesty that there was no way that, emotionally, I could track all the heartbreaking cases around the world. The two campaigns I have really become invested in are the “Woman Life Freedom” campaign against Forced Veiling in Iran and the campaign against the Death Penalty. It was fantastic to see Yasaman Aryani released from custody and Narges Mohammedi being awarded the Nobel Price for Peace. The abolition of Death Penalty is something Amnesty has been working on for over six decades with notable success.? ? ???What advice would you give to someone who wants to work in your field, or in the charity industry??? I remember when I was younger, my peers were really pushing for commercial success. I occasionally meet them – one is now an artist, another an acupuncturist. My learning – do what makes you happy. On your death bed you won’t be wishing that you spent more time in the office.?? ? Please support our work so we can continue the fight for #humanrights: https://lnkd.in/dT7ygdpt?

???? Happy Amnesty International Day! ???? Today, we commemorate Amnesty International Day—a moment to honour the tireless efforts of individuals and organisations worldwide in the fight for human rights and justice for all. It's a day to reflect on the importance of standing up for the rights and dignity of every person, regardless of their background, beliefs, or circumstances. For over six decades, Amnesty International has been at the forefront of this vital mission, advocating for the release of prisoners of conscience, demanding accountability for human rights violations, and shining a light on injustice wherever it occurs. But the work is far from over. In a world where human rights are still violated with impunity, where individuals face persecution for speaking out, and where marginalised communities continue to suffer discrimination and oppression, the need for organisations like Amnesty International has never been greater. On this day, let's reaffirm our commitment to defending human rights and promoting justice for all. Let's stand in solidarity with those whose voices have been silenced, and let's work together to create a world where everyone can live with dignity, freedom, and equality. Whether you're signing petitions, raising awareness, or supporting organisations like Amnesty International, your actions matter. Together, we can build a future where human rights are respected and protected for generations to come. Happy Amnesty International Day to all! ??? #AmnestyInternationalDay #HumanRights #JusticeForAll #StandUpForRights #Solidarity ????

Read my piece in PassBlue on the reintegration of survivors of Boko Haram and military abuses. These young women and girls are demanding their rights. They want education, healthcare, justice, and remedies. What Nigeria can do to empower them, and how the UN can support.
#Opinion from Joyce Bukuru, Amnesty International's representative to #theUN. The reintegration of young women and girl survivors of Boko Haram was the focus of a?recent report?by Amnesty International. "To date, the Nigerian authorities have failed to take effective measures to uphold their international human rights obligations, including to reintegrate the girls and young women. Nigerian authorities have also failed to prosecute members of Boko Haram and the Nigerian military for crimes committed under international law against the victims. "Authorities must thoroughly, independently, impartially, transparently and effectively investigate the allegations of crimes under international law committed against the girls and young women and bring them to justice in fair trials." https://lnkd.in/g4wAax_Q

The toll of human suffering and death across Israel, Gaza and now Lebanon is horrifying. I acknowledge the ongoing and escalating impact of the war on communities in Australia. We have heard from affected communities about their feelings of loss, uncertainty, fear, anger and grief at what is happening. We recognise the disturbing rise in incidents of antisemitism, Islamophobia and anti-Arab and anti-Palestinian racism in Australia.? The Commission will continue to support and engage with all communities to address discrimination and hate speech.?The Commission continues to provide?access to justice?services for all people affected by racial discrimination and vilification. The Commission has been funded to undertake a program of community engagement and awareness raising about racism to support safety in Jewish, Palestinian, Muslim and Arab communities across Australia. We have also been funded by the Australian Government to conduct a?Study into the Prevalence and Impact of Racism in Australian Universities. The study will have a significant focus on antisemitism as well as Islamophobia. I call on Australian governments to protect people’s rights to peacefully assemble and protest. Any limitation on protest rights must be strictly necessary and reasonable. In general, protests should not be restricted based on the ideas or viewpoints taken by protesters. However, governments must address hate speech and the incitement of violence. I urge the Australian Government to adopt a compassionate, sustainable, non-discriminatory humanitarian response to people fleeing the violence. At the international level, I urge the Australian Government to support efforts to achieve a sustainable ceasefire, the protection of civilians, the return of hostages and accountability for violations of international humanitarian law. The?Advisory Opinion?of the International Court of Justice on 19 July 2024 should be supported. I endorse?the statement?of Volker Türk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights:?'As the world reflects on and considers its inability to prevent this carnage, I urge all parties to agree to an immediate ceasefire, lay down their arms and stop the killing once and for all. The hostages must be released. Palestinians arbitrarily detained must be freed. Israel’s illegal occupation must end and the internationally agreed two-State solution must become a reality.' I urge the Australian Government to support international efforts towards achieving a lasting peace and a two-state solution that addresses the root causes of the violence. https://lnkd.in/eM82JsUQ

#AllEyesOnRafah I have several questions for those who identify themselves as human rights activists and organizations: 1. Could you please clarify the primary objectives of human rights organizations when they seem unable to effectively address pressing priorities? 2. Why is there a noticeable silence from human rights activists and organizations concerning the widespread violence occurring in Palestine? 3. Where is the United States, often portraying itself as a leading advocate for human rights, amidst these critical situations? 4. Additionally, why aren't women's rights activists addressing the severe treatment inflicted upon women by Israeli soldiers? These questions aim to understand the role and effectiveness of human rights advocacy in light of current global challenges. #Rafah #HumanRights #Palestine #Activism #GlobalJustice #CivilRights #SocialJustice #Accountability #WomenEmpowerment #USPolicy #PeaceBuilding #Equality #HumanitarianAction #Solidarity #JusticeForAll #Advocacy #RightsViolations #GlobalResponsibility #HumanitarianCrisis #VoiceForTheVoiceless

?? Urgent Appeal Update: Advocating for Julian Assange and craig murray At Justice pour Tous Internationale, we continue to advocate vigorously for the rights of Julian Assange and Craig Murray, whose cases symbolize the broader struggle for justice and transparency in human rights enforcement. ?? Julian Assange’s Plight: Julian Assange remains detained under conditions recognized as arbitrary by the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention. Unfortunately, recent communications from UN mechanisms have not only failed to call for his release but also misrepresented his detention timeline, undermining past advocacy efforts and compromising the integrity of human rights commitments. ?? Craig Murray’s Challenges: Craig Murray faces ongoing injustices stemming from a murky terrorism-related investigation initiated upon his entry into the UK. The lack of action from the UN, especially from the Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression, is alarming. His situation highlights severe oversight and raises concerns about selective human rights advocacy within the UN framework. ?? Call for Action: We urge the OHCHR and relevant UN bodies to: Publicly support Assange and Murray. Engage Special Procedures mandate holders for a coordinated response. Initiate independent inquiries under HRC Resolution 18/6 to address and rectify selective engagement in their protective mandate. ?? Incident for Review: We also bring attention to an incident during the Human Rights Committee's 140th Session where dialogue concerning Assange and Murray was inappropriately stifled. As we prepare for our engagement with the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) later this year, we seek assurance that similar incidents will be prevented, ensuring that discussions reflect the UN's commitment to impartiality and justice. We have shared our concerns and the follow-up urgent appeal with Mr. Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and Mr. Livingstone Sewanyana, UN Independent Expert on International Order. Copies have also been sent to all Heads of Permanent Missions in Geneva to garner broader support and awareness. Your Voice Matters: Join us in our call for transparency and justice. Your support can help influence outcomes and restore faith in global human rights advocacy. Please support our advocacy efforts by donating to our crowdfunding: https://gofund.me/5e134c69 Link in Craig Murray's blog: #HumanRights #JusticeForAll #UN #JulianAssange #CraigMurray #freeassange #Assange #Palestine #Gaza #freedomofspeech

#BreakingNews ?? On Monday (27 May 2024), it was announced that Chonthicha “Lookkate” Jangrew, an MP for the Move Forward Party, was sentenced to two years in prison over a speech she made three years ago at an anti-government protest. Chonthicha denies this lèse majesté charge and has been granted bail pending an appeal against the court’s decision. Although granted bail has ensured Lookkate can still perform her duties as MP, it does not negate the fact that this injustice was still served by Thai court, only weeks after activist Bung, died in custody for the same 112 offense. It is pastime to #Abolish112 and ensure the right to freedom of expression in our nation, and maintain the safety of those on the frontlines trying to achieve it. Lookkate has used her official capacity to advocate for human rights and social equality, she has also joined committees for refugee aid and helped to draft labor reform. Lookkate has fervently committed to fighting for freedom of expression by introducing an amnesty bill for thousands of activists charged or imprisoned for political reasons, over the past two decades. In her own words “what we, as people in power, right now have to do - is to keep their hope alive.” Though the system tries to prove itself hopeless, our movement is not without hope. Our country’s youth and resistance will always persist, we will always fight to see a democratic nation that does not consistently punish freedom of speech. Manushya stands in solidarity with all pro-democracy activists, protesters, and human rights defenders. #WeAreManushyan ? It is sad to see how countries aspiring to become EU Member States are in fact backsliding when it comes to ensuring free, pluralistic and diverse civil society. After Georgia with the recent approval of the "Foreign Agent Law", now Republika Srpska, one of the two entities in Bosnia Herzegovina, may follow suit. The EU must be clear that the Draft Law on the Special Registry and Publicity of the Work of Non-Profit Organisations, which severely limits the work of organisations receiving foreign funds, and will have a huge impact on women's organisations, is incompatible with EU accession. #BosniaHerzegovina #civilsociety #foreignagentlaw #EuropeanUnion Read our statement here ?? https://lnkd.in/dp5qfNta
