?? ??On Monday evening after the Environment Council, the Green Growth Partnership - a strategic partnership between CLG Europe and the Green Growth Group of Member States - held a dinner between Environment and Climate Ministers, the European Commission and leading businesses from CLG Europe and the Shift Belgium. ?? The key topic was the #2040ClimateTarget, with businesses laying out their support for a target of at least 90% and the enabling conditions that could help deliver that. It was an excellent opportunity to hand over the letter convened by CLG Europe, where more than 100 leading businesses, investors and business organisations called on the EU to agree the 2040 target. ?? ? Read the letter here: https://bit.ly/48ZacPW Ministers discussed the target, and the key need for business support and leadership to deliver on the goals. Core to success on climate and environmental goals is how to better engage citizens and ensure that decisions taken now ensure our future #competitiveness, take us on the right technological paths to achieve climate neutrality and deliver the transition in the most cost-effective way.?This does not mean reducing ambition but ensuring that strategic industrial decisions are taken, backed by public and private finance, using an approach guided by competitive sustainability thinking. Businesses also highlighted the opportunities provided by the circular economy and the need to decarbonise materials. ??♀? Every worker and community affected by the transition to a more sustainable future deserves support, especially in the face of increasing impacts from climate change. Strengthening the European social model is crucial to ensure a just transition. That is why we’re excited to join the European Alliance for a Just Transition and sign the joint declaration to call for a just transition in Europe and beyond. It is an informal group of civil society organisations, social and environmental movements, and political parties with a shared vision for a climate-neutral society that is just and far. The alliance enables the just transition by advising the European Commission and Council of the European Union, organising capacity-building webinars, developing a joint narrative for policymakers and more. ‘The opportunity to design policies that better combine social and environmental benefits came through strongly at the European Conference on Just Transition last week. However, the role of the circular economy and how it can support a just transition within and beyond Europe felt less clear to some. That’s why we are proud to be working to fill this knowledge gap through our Circular Jobs Initiative and, more recently, by joining the European Alliance for a Just Transition. We look forward to providing evidence on how the circular economy can enable just transition’, says Esther Goodwin Brown,?Lead of our Circular Jobs Initiative.?? The Green deal is here to stay. And we need International Action, Intentional Implementation, Investments and Industrial Policy to deliver on our impact ambitions. That was a very clear message during the CSR Europe European Sustainable Industry Summit 2024 in Brussels! I participated in the high-level plenary session on Leveraging the EU Sustainability Framework for Corporate Impact, in which we discussed the vital role of #regulation to drive sustainability forward, in a way that prioritizes meaningful impact for people and the environment. Co-creation with producing countries and the small scale producers themselves is key. Companies should also collaborate with each other, finding pre-competitive synergies to address the problems they share. Multi-Stakeholder Initiatives (MSIs) cross-industry and including civil society play an important role to leverage knowledge and data sharing, finding solutions together. Thank you to my fellow session participants for the thought-provoking and inspiring conversation! Amaryllis Verhoeven Dr Hakan Lucius Francesco Tramontin Wouter Vermeulen Lorena Sorrentino One thing is certain; there’s enough work for us all still to do to ensure sustainable and inclusive #impact. But together, we can get there! Read more about the session and the summit here: https://lnkd.in/evGSuk4y? #CSR #ResponsibleBusiness #CSDDD #EU #EUSISummit

WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development and Volans are teaming up to create guidance for companies on aligning their trade associations with sustainability policies. Cami Daeninck and Richard Roberts highlight how trade associations can influence government policies and mobilize resources for climate action, aiming to transform inactive associations into leaders of the net-zero transition. Our new report, How Trade Associations Helped Put the World on a Sustainable Path: Looking Back from 2035, categorizes associations into four types: —?Accelerators: Actively promote Paris-aligned policies. —?Sleeping Giants: Support climate goals but lack action. —?Conflicted Catalysts: Support in principle but may hinder progress. —?Blockers: Actively oppose science-based policies. Understanding these categories helps companies strategize their engagement. WBCSD believes the business community can become a driving force for sustainability policies, but it requires a collective effort to manage political influence.
