Recent Updates to Climate Analytics Climate Analytics ( https://lnkd.in/dnsz45iN) is a new platform that provides?access to a vast database of high-quality hourly weather data,?with analysis tools to help you select the most appropriate data for your modelling projects. A recent overview webinar?(https://lnkd.in/d_eTSvZe) provides more information about this unique tool.?Since the first release last November,?there have been some important updates: ? When evaluating Climate Analytics with a trial licence, you can now access the “Design Year” and “Actual Year” datasets for?12 “trial” stations located in the USA, Ireland, Australia, and Egypt. This allows you to check that the data, morphing, and analysis capabilities meet your requirements before ordering a full licence.? ? ? The full global “Design Year” dataset for 2023 has now been added, so you can include last year’s data in your design simulations and climate analysis work. Note that “Actual Year” data is updated monthly, ensuring that you always have access to the latest data for post-occupancy modelling and other work requiring recent weather data. How do dynamic baselines work? Traditional baselines for nature-based carbon projects predict a project’s counterfactual (what would have happened in the area if no project occurred) by using historical data. Dynamic baselines take a different approach. They use up-to-date satellite data observations of the area in and around a carbon project over time to get closer to a ‘true’ quantification of a project’s impact. ???? Day 2 of the #30DayMapChallenge: Lines ???? For today’s theme, "Lines," I mapped the U.S. electric power transmission network, focusing on its increasing vulnerability to climate change. This analysis used Cooling Degree Days (CDD) data from the Center for Climate Resilience and Decision Science at Argonne National Laboratory, accessible through the ClimRR Portal (https://climrr.anl.gov/). To dive deeper, I examined Harris County—a high-risk area identified through the CDD analysis. By integrating FEMA’s Community Resilience Challenges Index (https://lnkd.in/e4KmGG8U), I identified vulnerable populations most at risk of power outages during extreme heat events. As prolonged heatwaves and rising temperatures drive higher cooling demands, the load on transmission lines increases, stressing our infrastructure. The CDD dataset highlights changing regional electricity needs as more energy flows to meet cooling demands, directly impacting grid resilience and exposing transmission lines to frequent thermal stress and climate risks. Mapping these risks is a critical step in preparing our power grid for future challenges. By visualizing vulnerabilities through data, we gain essential insights to strengthen grid resilience, adapt infrastructure, and support informed climate risk decisions. Data and AI took center stage during #climateweek, so it's fitting that DOE Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) shines a spotlight this week on Jennifer Faupel, PE, CEM and Cynthia Bensburg from the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations. The OBO team's exceptional efforts were recognized with a Federal Energy and Water Management Award earlier this year. They're leveraging optical character recognition to extract data from utility bills in 44 languages and over 1200 rate schedules, driving insights for global energy efficiency, water conservation, and decarbonization initiatives. ?????? This monumental task involved a blend of big-picture vision and meticulous local execution – from painstakingly validating data on lengthy bills to ensuring submission compliance across a huge variety of markets. As Jenna emphasized, this work may not be flashy, but it's the bedrock of impactful climate strategy.
