New antibodies target the NA globular head domain of influenza virus protein ?? ? Researchers from The National Institutes of Health have discovered human monoclonal antibodies targeting the underside of the neuraminidase (NA) globular head domain. The NA protein is common among several influenza subtypes, including H3N2. With the broadly cross-reactive and protective N2 NA-targeting human antibodies, the team identified conserved non-overlapping epitopes on the underside of NA head. These results may help the development of effective vaccines and therapeutics against ever-changing influenza viruses. ? Influenza causes substantial morbidity and mortality and poses global public health and economic challenges. Current vaccines typically induce antibodies against the surface glycoprotein hemagglutinin (HA) that can block viral attachment to its host receptors and viral membrane fusion to the host cell, but they confer little cross-protection from other strains or subtypes. ?
