THE BOOK TOUR BEGINS! You'll see my new book, "The Mentally Strong Leader" on tour, along with snippets about the book; i.e. a tour of the book. First up, live from the famous canals of Amsterdam. Ever been? What did ya think? And know that part of mental strength is the ability to maintain goal-focus - including avoiding procrastination. Key to doing that is to just...get...started on that thing you've been putting off. I know you know that, but here's why this matters (which you may not know). Simply starting a task triggers the Zeigarnik Effect, named after researcher Bluma Zeigarnik. Her studies showed if you can manage to just start a task, you’re far more driven to finish it. The brain registers when a task has started and when it has been interrupted. Uncompleted tasks nag at us, driving us to complete the task. That’s why television shows often end their season with a cliffhanger episode. Creators know our brain remembers that last episode and the interruption in the story. Our brain wants a conclusion, so we hungrily tune in to, or stream, the next season. Simply starting a task also stops you from overestimating how difficult or unpleasant the task will be. How many times have you started on something and wound up telling yourself, “This ain’t so bad”? And don’t fall into the trap of waiting for the magic “I feel like it” moment (odds are, it won’t come), or count on your willpower to kick in and get you going. In fact, studies like one from Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Business show that willpower is consistently overestimated, while how quickly it’s depleted is underestimated. Nor should you convince yourself, “I’ll wait, I work better under pressure.” Research shows the opposite; people under stress make more errors. This is especially true when the stakes are high, as evidenced by a study showing that stressed doctors and nurses in an emergency department made more errors. Finally, on this front, you might think setting self-imposed deadlines will get you going, but a study from noted MIT researcher Dan Ariely shows it’s far more effective to set deadlines externally, like with your boss or a friend. #newbook #mentalstrength #selfleadership #leadership

Something I have been thinking a lot about lately is the concept of good friction and bad friction. As I’m learning to see the difference, it’s helping me prioritize where I spend my efforts trying to make things better. More importantly, it’s allowing me to let the good friction remain where it’s needed, as not all friction is bad. It shows up in performance coaching sessions when a person is not sure how to do something or when a person is not inclined to do their research. The intention behind offering feedback is to influence change or modify behavior. However, when it is offered in the form of criticism, even when it is skillfully presented using a non-judgmental tone, people on the receiving end can still feel attacked, disappointed in themselves, or embarrassed. This can lead to reactions such as withdrawal, defensiveness, or even anger. When criticism is extreme, it can be perceived as condescending or even bullying. When this happens, organizations can lose good people, or impair productivity. February has been a month for many of us, and I find we can all rush from day to day and week to week with little chance to catch a breath or to reflect ... I thought I'd prompt some reflections by sharing my wins and struggles ... It's so important that we don't only count the wins, as most wins have several struggles. We wouldn't have work or jobs if things were easy or wins were automatic. But also because we need to normalise struggles and transparency so we don't reinforce perfectionism or heroism. Some struggles ... ?? Somehow, my ISBN for the book got registered under the wrong publisher, and now I need to undo that. I'm still trying to solve it. ?? I had a misunderstanding that took far too many emails to resolve and was stressful, but I had loads of learnings. ?? I'm running behind on some posts that need to be sent. ?? I discovered I have to do several unplanned events in the coming months and reorganise my calendar quite a bit. ?? The best solution for formatting my book is for me to do it ... which is way more work than I planned. Some wins ... ?? Yvonne Redding edited the book, and now we have finished touches to organise. ?? Several proposals that went out in 2023 are now in the scheduling phase. ?? Best chats on the @LeadershipUnwrapped podcast. ?? I took a break with some friends, and it was so good! So needed! So healing! ?? There were some fun things planned for 2024 this month! ?? Being a leader involves making some tough calls. Often, you need to make decisions that not everybody on your team is going to be happy with. If it’s likability you’re worried about, says Harry Kraemer, you have it all wrong. Kraemer, a clinical professor of management and organizations at Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management and an executive partner with a private equity firm, says, "If you focus on being liked, the chance of being respected, I actually think, is pretty low." Instead of trying to please everybody, be specific about the problem you're trying to solve and what you are proposing to do. Then tell your team that you will listen to anybody who believes that there's another way to fix the problem. But make it clear up front that after you listen to everybody, you are going to start to make decisions. Not everybody will be happy with what you decide on. But they are more likely to respect you.
