As we celebrate Ghana's Independence Day and #InternationalWomensMonth, I reflect on one of our ShE is Empowered Leaders' remarkable projects and her dedication to uplifting and empowering women in rural Ghana. Doreen was my mentee and ShE Leader from 2021-2022. During her midwifery residency in an unfamiliar community, she identified a significant challenge that women in the farming community of Ko Nandom, Ghana were facing. Doreen seized the opportunity to transform this challenge by introducing bead-making skills to these women. This initiative not only empowered them to achieve financial independence but also enabled them to generate income throughout the off-farming seasons, thereby supporting both themselves and their families. As a result of her efforts, these women now earn approximately $19.2 per month. I am immensely proud of Doreen for her project and her dedication to uplifting and empowering women in Ghana. Meet Doreen Bart-Addison , our 2022 Africa Matters ShE leader. Below, she shares the inspiration behind her CEP and how Africa Matters Supported her : “In the community of Ko Nandom, a rural area in the upper West region of Ghana, we faced various socioeconomic challenges that prompted the implementation of my community engagement project. Being a farming community suited up North means we only had one major raining season each year, which made life incredibly difficult for most community members when the farming season came to an end. However, the situation was even more dire for young girls and women, and as a midwife, I witnessed firsthand the struggles they faced as I interacted with them and saw cases recorded in my hospital. In response to these pressing issues, I initiated a community engagement project aimed at empowering women and young girls in their reproductive age. The project's objective was to provide them with skills that would make them financially independent and enable them to generate income even during the off-farming seasons, supporting both themselves and their families. The ShE is Empowered Program, which I was a part of in 2022, supported me by providing technical training capacity and seed funding of $250, which was used to acquire extra materials needed for the training. Furthermore, I personally mobilized an additional $430 to ensure we had all the necessary resources for the training of these women.” If you’d like to support more young change-makers like Doreen, you can donate or share information about our programs here https://shorturl.at/alsTZ #africamatters #sheisempowered #she2024 #testimonial #programimpact
