As we embark on another EXEAIQ? Leadership+ session, I am honored to introduce a deeply personal reflection, rooted in the exemplary leadership and life philosophy of my father, John Allen Winters. His memoir, A Memoir of Sorts: On Democracy, is far more than a historical reflection—it is a testament to a life lived with purpose, where the unknown was never something to fear but rather to approach with curiosity, learning, and resolve. My father’s leadership path was guided by an understanding that happiness and the pursuit of knowledge were not defined by reaching final answers, but by embracing the process of discovery. Whether in his roles as a public servant, mentor, or father, he found meaning in the journey itself. He believed that true mastery comes from engaging fully with the unknown, remaining humble amidst uncertainty, and always seeking wisdom over certainty. What makes this moment even more special is that I continue to share life’s simple pleasures with him—whether it’s through a thoughtful conversation or a game of chess that mirrors life’s strategic challenges. As we explore this discourse, Embracing Knowledge, Framing, and Purposeful Action: A Visionary Leader’s Imperative, we are reminded of the invaluable lessons he imparted—lessons that resonate not only with me, but with anyone striving to lead with vision, resilience, and integrity. His insights show us that leadership is not about having all the answers, but rather about framing the right questions, staying committed to the journey, and acting with both purpose and ethical responsibility. This leadership dialogue celebrates the principles my father has lived by and the qualities of leadership he has embodied. “I can’t remember the last time I had 5 minutes of uninterrupted time to think!” Over many decades, Nancy Kline, creator of the Thinking Environment? observed that “The quality of our attention profoundly affects the quality of other people’s thinking.” Nancy defines the quality of Attention in a Thinking Environment? as “Listening without interruption and with interest in where the person will go next in their thinking.” As a listener, to create a Thinking Environment?, we must “be more interested in what is real and true for people than we are frightened of being proved wrong.” As soon as I started to play with leveling-up the quality of Attention in my one-on-one coaching sessions and workshops I noticed a shift towards more honesty, more vulnerability, and more growth. I recently asked for feedback from the leaders who graduated in the latest cohort of my Authentic Leadership Program, which incorporates space to think in pairs. I asked the question “What has been the most valuable aspect of the program for you?” Here is what participants shared: ??“Allowing myself the time and space to do deeper thinking.” ??“Being more present in the moment and having time to think.” ??“It's allowed me to be more honest with myself and get past the facade. I'm feeling more confident in my ability to tackle day-to-day challenges.” ??“It has helped me to recognize when frustration and fear of failure has hijacked my thinking.” ??“It has helped me to speak openly and honestly with colleagues from other departments. And I've enjoyed helping them navigate their own thoughts and feelings whilst building new connections.” ??“It has allowed me to gain perspective on things that might be barriers to being my true self at work, and empowering others to be their true selves.” I sense that much of this feedback can be attributed to the heightened quality of Attention they experienced in the spaces we created in the program. What are some other ways we can effectively increase our self-awareness? A great tool to use is: Tip#4 - Journaling (effectively) Dr. Tasha Eurich recommends using journaling as a tool to become more self-aware, but that it needs to be done strategically otherwise it may not lead to improved self-awareness and simply be an exercise of “self-absorption”. Eurich offers three tips for people who want to try journaling: ?? Avoid writing about the same things, in the same way over and over again as it can lead to a “cycle of self-pity”; ?? Describe both facts and emotions, not just one or the other—you cannot learn about your emotions without facts, and you cannot learn about yourself without understanding your emotions; and ?? Write every few days, not every day because of the same “exercise of self-absorption” and “cycle of self-pity,” mentioned earlier. When our minds are filled with thoughts, stories, and emotions, it can be challenging to distinguish between reality and mere thoughts. Writing them down allows our brains to release them, no longer needing to hold and sort them simultaneously. ?? Journaling provides the chance to revisit and better understand your experiences. ?? ?? At the end of the day, leaders need to find what tools help them best. Becoming more self-aware is not an easy task, but ultimately an important skill for every leader to possess. ?? Lately I've been reading a lot about ????????-???????????????????? and how important it is for leaders. And I totally agree that leadership starts with self-leadership. However, I believe it should hold significance across all roles and responsibilities within an organisation. ??? In a recent breath-work session, the importance of consistently introspecting was reaffirmed, emphasising the need for proper tools — whether through breath-work, coaching, exercise, or engaging in conversations with colleagues or friends. ?? To me, self-leadership involves inward contemplation, reflecting on our thoughts and actions, and embracing new learning opportunities that pave the way for personal and professional growth. When exploring the concept, three core components consistently emerge: (??) ????????-??????????????????: A profound understanding of one's feelings, motivations, and behaviours. (??) ????????-????????????????????: Deliberate examination of thoughts, actions, and experiences to facilitate continuous learning and better decision-making. (??) ????????-????????????????????: Coupled with reframing, it empowers control over reactions in challenging situations. Particularly, reframing serves as a crucial pause to assess the true meaning of a problem, often softening initial intense reactions. ?? In essence, self-leadership is imperative as it nurtures a mindset of accountability, adaptability, and perpetual improvement.
