Dear #FridayNightListeners, Often the mid Feb post of this series is dedicated to #ValentinesDay, which takes place next Wednesday. But this year it's just the intro for a more serious topic... But where does the day actually come from? It may have originated of a Valentine from Rome, an early priest of Christianity who was executed for his faith on 14 February 269. He is said to have performed Christian weddings for couples, although this was forbidden at the time, more than a hundred years before Christianity was declared the state religion in Rome. From the 15th century onwards, so-called "Valentine's couples" were formed in England, who sent each other small gifts or poems. English emigrants took the Valentine's custom with them to the States, and so it came to West Germany after Second World War through US soldiers. Speaking of the #USA... Relations between the #EU & #UK and the US primarily take place in the political and economic sphere: - Both power blocs often hold similar opinions in international conflicts, due to historical circumstances and because both the USA and the majority of European states are members of #NATO. - Europe and the USA traditionally have close economic ties. The Marshall Plan, with which the USA was involved in the economic reconstruction of European countries after WWII, formed the background to this. - And, of course, both regions have fundamentally similar ideas of #liberalism and #democracy. "Together We're Strong" is a song by Mireille #Mathieu and Patrick #Duffy, released in 1983. A unique, very unusual singing couple. On one side one of the most successful artists of Europe ever, the French chansonette, on the other side the US actor, known in particular from the TV series #Dallas. Speaking of Duffy: his probably most famous scene ever was the trigger for an article on the subject of #SocialSelling...-> https://bit.ly/3uDhKcK Let me quote some text lines of the song: "A great man once said: Winter never fails to turn into Spring And though we're so different You and I When we're together Even the cold of December Feels like the middle of May You are the night I am the day You are the star that shows the way You are the instrument I play You're all the words I long to say You are the land I am the sea You are in counterpoint to me And we agree to disagree No need to lie I only know when we're apart I only live with half a heart I need your hand to play my card Together we're strong We can't go wrong And now we just know what to do And how to get our meaning through We're only one when we are two Together we're strong." According to political observers, 2024 could be a fateful year and severe test for the strength of the #love between Europe and the US. How nice would it be if the above lines didn't just apply to one couple or another, but also to the transatlantic relations? Have a romantic weekend. (cw06-2024_224) More: https://bit.ly/3VudwMj .

oh... Mireille Matthieu - amazing voice!
Valentine is indeed an exciting story. As far as I know, it was not primarily just about Christian weddings, but above all about weddings among slaves. It was not intended that slaves should marry - and then start a family. Slaves were supposed to have children and thus bring new slaves into the world. But anyone who is part of a family is a worse slave. So it's best to separate the children from their parents right away, just as calves are immediately isolated from their mother cow after birth.?
Valentinstag mal anders …
