Do your values have a price tag? ???? ?????????? ???????? ?????? ‘????????’ ???? ????????????????? I read something yesterday which made me smile. There’s a company whose recruitment goes like this: Candidates are picked up from the station by a shuttle bus. They sit interviews and aptitude tests. They’re returned to the station. The bus driver is asked how it went. No matter how well they did on the interviews and tests, if they were unpleasant to the driver, they're not invited back. “?????? ???????????? ?????? ???? ???????? ???? ?????? ?????? ?????? ???? ?????? ????????????, ???? ?????? ?? ???????? ????????????.” When I was MD in a previous life, I discovered a senior manager was achieving their sterling results through a variety of unsavoury tactics with their team and peers. They were nice as pie when I was in the vicinity. Bullies tend to be with those in a stronger position. So it took a while to get back to me. I sacked them. I followed due process and had the full support of our chairman (and majority investor). This mattered because they were considered a key driver of our double digit growth. If you've ever worked for a large organisation, you'll know of many bad apples who stay in their position because of all sorts of political and systemic reasons. Even when it’s obvious what the ‘right’ thing to do is. This is one of the greatest attractions to me of the solopreneur route. You get 100% final say on who you work with. You don't even have to be fully rationalised. Sometimes 'energy' is enough of a tell. It may or may not be possible to quantify if being nice has a material effect on your long term profits. I don't care. What I do care about is knowing I've not aided and abetted assholery for the sake of $$. “(?? ???????? ?? ?? ??????????) ?????? ?????? ???????? ???? ???? ?? ???????????? ??????” - Tupac My values don’t have a price tag. Do yours? Have you ever turned down a commercial opportunity to remain true to your values? PS. G = $1000. You laugh but I've been called out for not explaining that before. PPS. I've always gone out of my way to greet receptionists, janitors, doormen, parking attendants, as I would a board director. Taken a genuine interest in how they are and how their family's getting on. Because my mum raised me this way, not in expectation of a return. But then the number of times it's come back in spades when I've needed some flexibility, or a helping hand that's beyond their job description... ----------- If you found this of interest, share ?? this post and follow Quy Langridge-Tien for insights on impactful personal branding, and a life of health, wealth and happiness. ? Your principles are infinitely more valuable than money ever will be. Love the way you said it Quy “what I do care about is knowing I’ve not aided and abetted assholery for the sake of $$.” I’ve left a bully boss at a high paying role and took a crap paycheck for nearly a year, and I now ultimately make more than I ever have before. It’s taught me that karma is very real if you’re patient and trust that good things eventually come your way when your heart’s in the right place.

1 年The interview test was such a perfect segue into your point. I haven't heard of that, and it's so awesome. So far my values do not have a price tag, and I actively check myself as I earn more money, Quy Langridge-Tien ?. I wish more people actively thought about this.
