Dear #FridayNightListeners, This post is about people from #England. No, I don't mean my business-bubble, but the "normal" people. Late last year I was on holiday for a few days, more precisely on the island of #Sal, part of #CapeVerde. When we arrived there, well, we had our doubts as to whether the hotel was a good choice for two reasons: 1) It was huge. Ok - we knew it was big beforehand. But when we got there, it was initially too big for us. 2) There were at least 80%, more likely 90% English people in the hotel. "That can be funny!" ironically meant. Because as a German you have your prejudices about English people on holiday... To deal with the first point quickly: The #hotel didn't get any smaller, but you got used to it and, above all, you found your own hood, your selected area. Just like when you live in a big city, you live in your neighbourhood, not "in the city". Point two is linked to this. Because apparently that's what most people do: they look for a specific place. With the consequence that you then saw the same people regularly. And inevitably you end up with the English in contact. I must admit: my second question was usually about the favorite football club. And this stereotype works, because apparently every English person - male or female - is a football fan. But of course football doesn't carry more than one or two conversations. And so we also chatted about politics, the economy, leisure, sociopolitical issues, holidays... to be honest: you didn't always have the right vocabulary at hand (you need a different vocabulary than in business) and e.g. when people were from Manchester, the wind was blowing and their gaze wandered to the sea while they were talking... then it became tricky at times. But: and this is actually the message: none of the negative preconceptions of #English people on holiday came true (and if they did, it was likeable and authentic). There were great encounters and conversations. And, to be honest, the feeling of shame on someone's else behalf came in the second week - when more Germans arrived. Incidentally, one of the most important meeting points was the #poolbar. And there was music from 11am to 6pm. I don't know if there was a certain #algorithm for the #playlist - but three songs were played over and over again, at least each once an hour, sometimes even twice. Besides the song chosen for today, it was "Dance Over me" by George Ezra and "Hear Me Singing" by Dawn Brothers and DeWolff. The fact that in the pool bar it was often said "Can I get..." (albeit more politely), I chose this song by #Adele - an English lady from London. As indicated, in so many ways we are extremely similar - more similar than people generally think! In any case: when this song was played (and a few others as well), the English and Germans roared... ehm...sang together. #Music unites. Just like hopefully #FridayNightListeners. Have a sunny winter weekend. (cw05-2024_223) More: https://bit.ly/3VudwMj .

?? Was lernen wir wieder daraus?

I was on Sal in 1994 for two weeks - an empty place in the Atlantic Ocean. Interesting to read how it changed. Lovely to read about the music and the conversation with the English Oliver S. Bauer

Great post - as an Englishman who lived in Germany I can sympathise. I can also agree that football is one of the few universal languages…
