A new era in managing stress - what leaders should have on their radar. Last week, Pascal Joncour, partner on our Brain Health Fund, spoke The House of KOKO in London alongside prominent minds in corporate leadership, music, wellness, and research. Taking the stage alongside Pascal: ??Maejor: multi-platinum Grammy-nominated artist and music producer ??Alyson Meister, PhD: Professor of Leadership and Organizational Behavior at IMD ??David Erritzoe: Clinical Director at the Centre for Psychedelic Research at Imperial College London Psychedelics, sound healing, and breathwork have been hitting the main stage in recent years as the movement for workplace wellness continues to gain momentum. As best said in this post, “Leaders have an #impact on everyone around them – in and outside of work – so it’s in everyone’s interests that they be more balanced, grounded and human.” This new era in #leadership is moving away from celebrating exhaustion and coming to the realization that a well rested and balanced mind creates better performance. And while headlines focus on a narrow cluster of mental wellness tools, we want to introduce to something rather ‘low-key’ – Technodelics. A growing sector, Technodelics aims to create psychedelic-like effects through technology such as VR and haptic feedback. These new tools and leadership values are what we champion in our investments. #Health #London #switzerland
Self-development, health?and inspiration were on everyone’s agenda at an exclusive event in London today, a collaboration between IMD, The House of KOKO and multi-platinum Grammy-nominated artist and music producer Maejor. ? The corporate, music, wellness and research industries?haven’t always spoken the same language?–?but that might be about to change. Guests arrived from as far afield as Liechenstein and Dubai to hear IMD Professor of Leadership and Organizational Behavior Alyson Meister, PhD share tips for wellbeing in the workplace, experience a sound healing workshop led by Maejor, and learn about the science and business of psychedelics. ? “Workplace stress remains?at an all-time high, despite increasing awareness and a booming wellness industry,” said Meister. The good news? “Better mental health cascades?into every area of life.”?Leaders have an impact on everyone around them – in and outside of work – so it’s in everyone’s interests that they be more balanced, grounded and human. ? Meister shared the three Rs of managing stress: ? ?? Realize: Learn the signs of chronic stress –?notice the state of your energy and your?nervous system. If you’re in a stress response, your decision making may be impaired. ? ?? Regulate: Apply strategies to change?your state in the moment, using tools such as breathing techniques, music, and meditation?to let your parasympathetic nervous system bring you calm. ? ?? Recover:?Release the accruing effects of stress. Sleeping under your desk is no longer a badge of honour. You would not want the pilot of your plane to fly on no sleep - high performance life means managing your energy. ? Maejor?led a sound healing session where participants were encouraged to visualize areas they’d like to see improvement in, while following guided breathing and listening to one of his tracks designed to promote healing using optimum frequencies and repetition. He quoted Albert Einstein: “The future of medicine is frequencies.” ? He spoke movingly about how having cancer in his twenties had prompted him to find a way to make a positive impact in the world sooner rather than later. ? They were joined by David Erritzoe, Clinical Director at the Centre for Psychedelic Research at Imperial College London, and Pascal Joncour, Partner at Convergence Partners, for a panel discussion on the science, business and spirituality of the?psychedelic renaissance. ? Erritzoe outlined how clinical trials into these compounds have yielded promising results in treating illnesses like?PTSD,?depression and anorexia, while “microdosing” is becoming increasingly popular among entrepreneurs and executives alike. ? “Psychedelics are a game-changer,” said Joncour, whose Swiss venture capital firm invests in healthtech startups across Europe.
