Founders, don’t rush to open champagne if the investor says yes. First, make sure that the investor actually said yes, and second, remember that the deal is not closed until the money hits the bank. A founder called me late at night a couple of weeks ago and happily told me that his startup had its first check from an angel. Yesterday the very same founder called me with the opposite news - the angel who, according to the founder, promised to invest $75k, decided to back out of the deal. When I started asking questions, it turned out that: 1) The angel did not promise to invest. He only said that he liked the startup and would be happy to decide on investment after the founder finds a lead investor (we are talking about a $500K round). 2) The angel and the founder didn't make a handshake deal. 3) The founder made a big mistake because he started telling other angels that he had already gotten the first check from the angel and the investors needed to hurry up. Having learned about this, the angel said that he would not invest in his startup. #fundraising #startups #angels #venturecapital #siliconvalley

108 first calls to raise $50M. No, we're not talking about a startup raising funding. Startups aren't the only ones pitching - VCs do it too. Here's the pitch deck Nichole Wischoff used in over 108 first calls with LPs for her recent $50M Fund III. A few things: ? She raised the entire fund in 5 months. ? Took over 80 first calls in three weeks to start the raise. ? $38.5M of the $50M are from 6 LPs. ? Used Caviar to create the deck. Several key elements that successfully attracted LPs: ??
