Hi everyone. Today another episode of Boss Meets and today we're gonna do something slightly different. We are here at the sustainability festival here in Adastral Park where we as BT host a 1500 people physically in the location and a lot more people online to talk about sustainability and technology. Now we're here with Sally Eaves. All of you know and Sally is going to ask me some questions. Fantastic. Thank you. Bears real pleasure. I mean. Have a fantastic atmosphere. You can see all around us sessions going on behind us and again, I just love all the assets around here, really supply chain community collaborations with before. Isn't it brilliant? Fantastic. So I'm gonna ask you the questions 1st and if I may, I'm going to start with leadership and I think it really does set the time, doesn't it? So for you, bad for your take. How do you see the role of CEO kind of empowering business sustainability and leading on that strategy? I think it's extremely important as a CIO you you lead in the whole discussion around sustainability because. As in any company, you know your carbon footprint is everywhere and and and as a CIO you can you can connect your devices. You can you can assemble data to manage that sustainability and if you if you know what you're measuring, you can you can take action. And on the other hand we see a few trends that technology takes that also worsens the problems a little bit because we use immense amounts of data we generate and we want immense amounts of compute power, particularly with Gen. AI which uses. A bigger footprint. And I think as a CIO you need to lead in the discussions around how are we going to make sure that we lower our footprint as much as possible whilst using new technology. And I do think other than potentially 1020 years ago when we started all of these discussions, today technology is there to help us leapfrog and solve some of the problems that we see on sustainability. Couldn't agree more. I mean it was just said quite recently, wasn't it Holly, Holly crisis in terms of all these. This is a change affecting sustainability at the moment. So leadership absolutely matters. It sets that tone. Yeah. Then obviously let's go into a different area around technology. But connectivity itself, I think it's kind of the hub of the world really in terms of enablement for all these different actions. And in particular, when you look at excluding the unconnected to, I think that's a massively important elements of connectivity as well. But also just the fact of embedding these considerations by design. So for example, sustainability from the network up, perhaps that's our way to take it. How do you see the role of connectivity and leadership you're taking here at? See our technology I think also in connectivity has has taken a leap. So we we tend to look at three things. We call it measuring, connecting and scaling. So first of all, you need to start by measuring what is and this is what we help customers with what if we look at our network, if we look at our connectivity, how much impact does that have on your footprint. So if you know that you can deal with it and there's many ways you can deal with, with that particular impact, it's devices, it's it's the way you move traffic, etcetera, the second one. Is all around a connecting smart and green devices. We've announced today that we have a partnership with Johnson Control who obviously manages a lot of buildings. And in these buildings there are a lot of devices that will tell you whether or not you're using energy, whether or not there's people in the building. And that information if you, if you use the the connectivity to assemble that data and to analyze that data, you can do something with it. So that's the second thing. The third thing is scaling what I just said happens all. Companies and that is that compute power is going up and that sometimes we do not use the digital technology as efficient as possible and we wanna make it easy for customers to analyze it and therefore. Basically treat their data differently. So if you put your data in a hyper scaler, you don't have to move petabytes from A to B. Sometimes it's OK to move a little bit of data because that will do the trick. And if you give visibility on that, you will be able to reduce the footprint that you have as an organization. So. So that's how we use connectivity today. Key challenges as well. You know whether it's complexity or fragmentation, lack of integration, visibility of everything, you know it's so, so important that has to come from that data foundation before we look at the other emerging technologies that we can bring in particular things around AI, machine learning as well. So absolutely love that and other other part of this as well. Obviously it's not just about technology. You mentioned there about the power of partnership, absolutely love that. I love to drill into that a little bit further. But beyond that too, this is really a people's situation, isn't it? It's all about not just the technology. Its culture, its skills, it's mindset, it's change management, it's process. It's very holistic and bringing all those elements together with the people packed, it matters. I mean you see it's a passionate people just in communication and storytelling of the data really matters too. But where do you see the role of people here and how are you fostering that? BT? Well, you can see it here. This is, this is an immensely pecked agenda. It's a very, very well visited event and it starts with people. I totally agree with you. If you look at our organization to start with, we have about 100,000 people working for. ET we've had the purpose of BT is we connect for good. Yes. And we really truly feel that responsibility to and and we have that have had that for decades. Where we focus on sustainability, we focus on our impact on the climate and people individually that work at BT feel that responsibility. I feel that responsibility and therefore when we do something in this space, it makes us proud and we therefore are very easy and easier to work with partners that have the same objective and I can see this. Today here if if I'm if I sum up my conversations with people, it's all people that all go for the same purpose. So lower impact, making sure that you have your eye on the long term future and let technology leapfrog and I think that's people working together, nothing else. Really. See, this is a shared value proposition isn't it? It's like that phrase doing well by doing good. Really if you're investing in sustainability, not only investing in in in the planet and your community and the population exactly look at energy costs, but the crisis we're in there, you're actually delivering for the bottom line too. So it really is a shared value opportunity. But I've gotta say about community as well as part of that people's situation or just speaking to some some, some, some some early 20 year olds that were on the table over there, they get involved in non conference. Yeah you're arranging later on at the month. So it really is an example this isn't. So once I'm done event, he's a deeply embedded, all you've done for years, but also there's a satellite, you know, there's another, there's another event, you're bringing in different populations. You're letting all voices be heard. And that for me is one of the biggest takeaways because dialogue really matters, but it's dialogue followed up by transparent and accountable action. Absolutely. And that's what you've done so well, You know with with the dashboards you launched back back in February. Yeah. And the partnerships to be SAP and also with Johnson Controls as well. It's ecosystem coming together. Yeah, it's the good embedded. Right across a life cycle. When I love that, you could probably tell us I'm speaking. I absolutely, really love what you're doing in this particular area. Thank you. And if I have a final take away sentence, I think we talk about sustainability. You don't. We talk about technology, sustainable technology. They're not just parallel lines. They're they're intertwined. They're embedded 1 reinforces the other. That's my biggest take away. And by coming together in the way we're doing here, we really are kind of dejected trajectory of positive change. Let's let's create a positive impact. That's my take away.
