?? “Ending poverty and hunger in Africa is the greatest challenge of our generation. Healthy soils are the bedrock of Africa’s food systems. Supporting this is more important than ever,” are the words from Estherine Fotabong, Director of Programme Implementation and Coordination, which opened the African Union Development Agency-NEPAD #COP28 event supported by AICCRA on accelerating action on soil health for Africa. Ahead of the African Union Fertilizer and Soil Health Summit to be held in Nairobi in 2024, this event drew together sector leaders to explore the action plan and solutions for climate-resilient food systems in #Africa. “The problems the world faces today cannot be solved by one organization. This has to be done as a collective. Anyone who has a stake in the business of food, nutrition or sustainable development is part of the journey,” urged Lindiwe Majele Sibanda, System Board Chair, CGIAR. Janet Edeme, speaking on behalf of Commissioner Josefa Sacko (AU Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy and Sustainable Environment) further emphasized the importance of a collective approach, “Collaboration is key – government, private sector, research and civil society must come together in partnerships to improve actions on soil health. But we must also ensure these are supported by policies…by funding and infrastructure development.” A diverse panel of speakers including Stephen Muchiri, Eastern Africa Farmers Federation (EAFF), Jo Puri, International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), Lifeng LI, FAO, Charles Nhemachena, Global Center on Adaptation, shared their insights on ongoing soil health actions and also highlighted the importance of: ?? Financing and support to farmers in implementing practice for soil health ?? Policies and priorities that create an enabling environment ?? Scaling up current interventions to meet the urgency of the need William R. Sutton (Bill), The World Bank, also highlighted the Bank’s work with CGIAR through AICCRA in promoting soil health and climate-smart agriculture practices in Africa. The event closed with an invitation from Manyewu Mutamba, Head (Ag) of Agriculture, AUDA-NEPAD, to the AU Fertilizer and Soil Health Summit to continue the conversation and drive forward actions for the continent’s soil health. ??
