By the numbers, the AGNES AFRICA Climate Leadership Program with technical support from AICCRA: ?? Since 2020, 700+ participants ?? 53 African countries represented ♀? More than 50% female participation The objectives of the program are to build and strengthen African climate leaders, to improve their knowledge and negotiation skills to enable them to engage effectively in international climate change policy discourse and to build capacity to contribute to the successful implementation of climate actions at regional and national levels. As we unpacked the impacts of our program at a #COP28 event today, we were thrilled to see it going from classroom to real world impacts and hearing how participants have been using learning negotiation and diplomacy skills in relevant climate negotiations and in training others in their workplaces. Some insights from our panelists: - Isingizwe Honorine (Young Volunteers for the Environment Rwanda) shared about signing up for the program after attending #COP26, wanting to know more about the confusing process of negotiations. Through the AGNES program, she's learned about not only negotiations but also climate governance and the global nature of climate change, including how the interests of so many countries are dealt with through diplomacy. - Tsaone Mokwatso (AGNES) comes from an agri-entrepreneur background and heard about the program through a friend. She had no background in climate change but she knew negotiation skills would be useful & was hooked from the first module on climate science. She thought about how she could play more of a role on advancing what farmers are doing and was able to use what she'd learned when she attended her first COP at #COP27. - Michael Khaduyu (African Youth Commission) says the program enhanced his courage, curiosity and growth. It's helped him in his career because he got the courage to venture into new areas and is transitioning from working in the youth space to getting into carbon markets issues in Africa. - CROMWEL LUKORITO shared on plans to make the course certified so participants will earn credits, not just a certificate of participation. The updated program will include an advanced module on gender which AICCRA, through Patricia Aruho Bamanyaki, will likely contribute significantly to. - Dr Madaka Tumbo shared on AGNES AFRICA's work to also build the capacity of parliamentarians on climate policy through the program. ?? The Climate Leadership program is an example of success through collaboration with AGNES AFRICA, AICCRA, International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), and faculty from national universities and local partners. 12 个月Emphasizing on developing and empowering African climate leaders is resonating strongly. Improving knowledge and negotiation abilities is critical for meaningful involvement in international climate policy debates. The emphasis on capacity building corresponds to the critical need for successful climate action at the regional and national levels, making this programme extremely relevant in determining COP28 outcomes.
