Last week, we had the pleasure of co-hosting 70 global investors at the Investor Summit in Kampala, Uganda. It was held during the Annual National Science Week, where local innovations were showcased and needle-moving conversations were had. Together, we explored the Ugandan startup ecosystem and discovered strong founders like Geofrey Mutabazi from Kaara, Abraham Banaddawa from Level Africa, Sandra Awilli from ShareCard, and Mina Shahid from Numida. We were also introduced to local ecosystem builders like Matthias M?bius and Noah Mesfin from StartHub Uganda, Esther Nshakira from Startup Uganda and Henry Kevin Wava from FITSPA Uganda. We also held a private government-investor session and discussed methods that can be used to catalyze the Ugandan startup ecosystem. We conducted several panels with investors, startups and local institutions like Stevens Mwanje from the NSSF and Joel Muhumuza from Stanbic Bank Uganda to discuss topics ranging from why investors are not investing in Uganda, what the role of media is and what opportunities exist in the fintech, climate tech and food security industries. Thrilled to have been part of such a transformative summit. It was an honor to connect with Investors, fellow ecosystem builders, and most importantly startups who are playing a part in spotlighting Uganda's startup scene.
I definitely had a good time discussing the opportunities on the continent and the work we are doing at Level Africa with the Greenhouse Capital team. I am grateful to all the talented investors who shared their time and wisdom with all of us across the ecosystem . I am certain many of us will look back on this week and say that was the time we started to tilt the world.
We - Uganda - appreciate the level of commitment to come and engage at such a high level of interest. There are a couple of rough gems that need polishing and with the right network/contacts, we definitely can close some transactions in the startup and hopefully VC/PE space.
The people brought together and connected by the National Science Week, startups, government, investors, partners and customers alike will always remember this day. A great milestone for the start-up ecosystem of Uganda. ShareCARD is especially thankful to have participated.
