The bold new European Wind Power Action Plan from?European Commission?aims to speed up the much-needed deployment of wind energy in Europe.?Tim Fischer, our global director for offshore wind services, explains why the plan is a gamechanger ??? ? Europe wants a minimum 42.5% renewable energy by 2030. That requires a massive expansion in deployed wind power capacity, from 204 GW in 2022 to more than 500GW capacity in 2030 ? Specifically:?? ? Offshore wind installation needs to increase to 12 GW per year, up from the current 1.2 GW.? Onshore wind installation must rise to 37 GW per year, up from 16 GW deployment per year.? ? “These targets are ambitious and directly compete with ever-increasing capacity targets around the globe. They also come at a time when the wind energy sector is facing major supply and capacity challenges, as well as financing insecurities due to inflation and steeply rising costs,” says Tim Fischer.? ? “Yet the European Commission has taken a vital step to strengthen Europe’s position in a highly competitive global market. The European Wind Power Action Plan will bring more certainty through improved market designs and processes that investors require and request. The plan provides a solid investment basis and enables Europe to maintain its role as the leading region in the wind industry.”? ? The plan will help to:?? ? ? Speed up deployment by streamlining and digitalising permitting processes, helping accelerate and simplify discussions with stakeholders across the project landscape.? ? ? Improve auction design by providing well-designed auction criteria, rewarding higher value-added equipment, further incorporating sustainability aspects, and ensuring on-time project delivery.? ? ?? Ensure global competitiveness by promoting EU and international standards, and mitigating unfair trade practices benefiting non-EU wind manufacturers.? ? ??♀? Enable skills development with the aim to train and qualify 100,000 experts within three years.? ? ?? Facilitate access to EU financing and de-risking guarantees, which supports innovation to reduce cost of energy, and enable large-scale implementation of emerging technologies such as floating offshore wind and green hydrogen.? ?
