Leading with Your Heart in Product Management As a product manager with over 20 years of experience, I've learned valuable lessons about successful leadership. The most crucial realization is that leadership does not require a title; it demands empathy and care for your team and product. Empathy has been my guiding principle throughout my journey. One pivotal experience came from my then manager, now mentor, during the rollout of card payment methods in France. Facing language and cultural barriers, I felt challenged during UAT testing with country managers and the local team. My manager urged me to empathize with the reasons behind the requested changes. Putting myself in their shoes, I understood the need for improvements, ensuring the best experience for French users. This change in perspective enabled a seamless collaboration with the team, and we met the deadline successfully. Our collective effort led to a rewarding outcome for the entire development team. A leader with a heart embodies essential qualities: -Empathetic: They understand and address their team's needs and concerns. -Motivational: They inspire their team to perform at their best. -Visionary: They have a clear product vision and can communicate it effectively. -Accountable: They take responsibility for their team's success or failure. If you want to be a successful leader in product management, I encourage you to focus on building relationships with your team and creating a positive work environment. When you do these things, you will be well on your way to leading with heart. Leaders who connect with their team on a personal level and foster a positive work environment tend to be the most effective. Building relationships, trust, and respect are key aspects of successful product management leadership. Do you want to become a more effective leader? Start by honing your empathy skills. Remember the powerful quote from Craig Groeschel: "We don't need a title to lead. We just need to care. People would rather follow a leader with a heart than a leader with a title."
