You guys…. this is a disaster. Medical students who are on rotations are not the same as a well trained nurses. This is completely unsafe. It’s technically illegal for us to work beyond the scope of our licenses. Not to mention the fact, that medical students don’t have a license. They’re literally in the infancy of their healthcare careers and rotate through every specialty. They are required to have direct supervision. This is beyond unsafe. #medschool #doctor #nurses #healthcareleaders #healthcare #nj #unsafe #patientsafety "We can't even believe they are asking this of us," said one medical school student, who wanted to remain anonymous. "The school is framing this as an altruistic volunteer opportunity because 'we care so much about our patients,' when it reality it's just a way for them to get free labor. The whole reason the strike is happening is because the nurses want to be paid more. Instead they get us to work for free." https://lnkd.in/gpFuYGs5
This shows you how unsupported nurses are. We are bodies and what we do is undervalued. I hope the medical school rethinks their position and show their solidarity and align with nursing to improve patient care not minimize it.
This is resident abuse.
This is nothing new. And it goes toward providing med students a salary. They do contribute.
Alarming….plus it is an insult to the nursing profession that this institution feels as though a nurse can be replaced, let alone the labor issues at hand.
I sincerely hope the medical students do not show up for this “volunteer” service. There are legitimate tactics that labor unions and employers can use in negotiations. Taking advantage of medical students is not one of them.

1 年Med students are cream of the crop and can certainly do the job (I would argue they are safer than having 1 RN covering 8-10 pts) - the issue is exploitation of labor and certainly illegal. If students want to moonlight voluntarily under the supervision of another nurse they should be reimbursed . Can argue this would be better experience than resorting to driving Uber which is not unheard of as it’s becoming ridiculously expensive to attend med school.?
