With science advancing rapidly and technologies like generative AI capturing the imagination of the world, making progress in medicine will require all of us to continue learning and considering new perspectives. Ahead of the summer, I want to share two books that have piqued my curiosity and that offer insights for the path forward. ? ? First up is a book by Siddhartha Mukherjee, called? The Song of the Cell: An Exploration of Medicine and the New Human. It’s a fascinating look at the history of?the biology and evolution of cells, and how cells affect human health. ? ? Another book is The AI Revolution in Medicine: GPT-4 and Beyond by Peter Lee, Carey Goldberg, and Isaac Kohane. As an exploration of the impact of AI on medicine and the avenues and limitations of the technology, it’s a good choice for those in our industry who are eager to learn more about where this moment in health and tech could take us—and where we need to remain humble on the journey. ? ? I’ll be looking for more?books to dive into this summer, let me know what you’re reading in the comments. ?
I would suggest the book I am currently reading on my NVS gardening leave ??The Age of Scientific Wellness: Why the Future of Medicine Is Personalized, Predictive, Data-Rich, and in Your Hands??
I would recommend "The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer" by Siddhartha Mukherjee. This book delves into the fascinating history, biology, and treatment of cancer, providing a comprehensive and engaging exploration of one of the most prevalent and enigmatic diseases. Mukherjee's storytelling prowess and depth of research make this book a compelling read, shedding light on the complexities of cancer while offering hope and insight into the ongoing battle against it.
Vas Narasimhan, you must read three 20+ year old books, so lively in today's context, "The world is flat" by Thomas Friedman. The other book is The Alchemist by Paul Coelho (Brazilian author). The best book that each one of us could resonate. Lastly, The Illusions by Richard Bach. This fits so well for you when I see your journey thus far. Enjoy the summer. If you wish to enjoy tropical weather, SG awaits you??. By the way, if you have read all three books, pls do share your insights. On a side note, pls get connected to my good connect Nicolai Tangen, he is more thzn a banker. Manu/SG

The AI revolution in Medicine is a great read indeed. I still feel like we are just scratching the surface of the topic. Now, whether we over estimate or underestimate the impact or speed at which it will come is very difficult to say. I do think that most don’t grasp the extent to which it might transform our industry.
Another book that traces the history and provides the good, bad, and ugly of AI: The Fourth Industrial Revolution and 100 Years of AI (1950-2050) ? By Dr. Alok Aggarwal, CEO and Founder of Scry AI. More details provided on www.scryai.com and https://www.amazon.com/Fourth-Industrial-Revolution-Years-1950-2050/dp/B0CPQLQ7LL
Vas, thanks for the thumbs up on our book. Very interested to see the extent which the basic data integration/sharing challenges of larger organizations like yours can be addressed using LLM-driven pipelines.
