BIG NEWS: UPSIDE Foods has received USDA label approval for cultivated meat ?? WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? ?? The USDA label approval is one of several steps for the USDA to approve the sale of their cultivated meat product. Standard meat products sold in the US are regulated through the same label approval process. This comes after the FDA approval which came through late last year. WHAT’S NEXT? ?? UPSIDE will now go through further USDA inspection steps to finalize the approval of the sale of their products to the public. This means that UPSIDE, the world’s first cultivated meat company, could make history as the first company to sell cultivated meat in the US. At this rate, consumers in the US may see cultivated meat on menus by the end of 2023. WHAT ABOUT OTHER COMPANIES? ???? GOOD Meat, which has been serving cultivated meat in Singapore since 2020, also received FDA approval several months ago. Numerous other cultivated meat companies from both the US and outside of the US have applied for FDA approval and more approval letters are expected in coming months. Additionally, Israel is expected to approve the sale of cultivated meat to consumers by the end of 2023 with further countries expected soon after. SO, CAN I EAT IT? ?? If you’re lucky! The release of cultivated meat will be in very, very limited restaurants across the US to start. We are still years out from retail distribution, but things will move quicker as capacity and scale is achieved. To see a technology that belonged in the dreams of a few believers come to life is the real gift this morning. First, congratulations, Uma Valeti, MD, David Kay, and the entire UPSIDE team. But more importantly, congratulations to the world. There is no greater goal of innovation than that to eliminate suffering. This is why we do it. ?? #futureoffood #cultivatedmeat #foodtech
