"Productivity Theater" - love that, or as my friend Marten likes to say.. 'It's so easy to fake it in the office'

Fantastic reading on the challenges created by productivity theater and great seeing two of my favorite leaders, Christina Janzer and Katie Burke, quoted in the same article! At HubSpot, Katie Burke and team are seeing that employees with flexibility have higher eNPS and are more connected than full-time office counterparts. In addition, salespeople's performance and engineering hours worked aren't impacted by location. So, why are so many execs pushing for a #ReturnToOffice? “Part of the reason you’re seeing so many people lobby for return to office is there’s this notion of, ‘That’s how I did it growing up,’” HubSpot chief people officer Katie Burke told Vox. That lack of belief that people are actually doing work is also driving productivity theater: measuring inputs, and people wasting time performing to them. “We see employers focus so much on measuring inputs instead of outputs,” Slack’s SVP of research and analytics, Christina Janzer. Given 60% of executives are tracking activity metrics (emails sent, hours worked) as their main way to measure productivity, it's no wonder that employees tell Slack they're spending one third of their time doing performative work -- what Anne Helen Petersen described as "LARPing your job." What's the right answer? Better training and support for managers: “I think organizations could reach their highest levels of productivity ever if they have managers who are upskilled to have the right kinds of ongoing conversations with people." - Jim Harter at Gallup. Great stuff by Rani Molla at Vox! https://lnkd.in/gcZpGwTY #productivity #remotework #hybridwork #management #enps
