The EU proposes new copyright rules for generative AI! In just a few weeks, ChatGPT by OpenAI experienced an unprecedented surge in popularity, making it the fastest-growing consumer application ever and drawing in 100 million monthly active users. As a result, some observers have expressed concern about the rush among tech companies to release generative AI products to the market. Much debate has been on using copyrighted material in training AI models and how to strike a balance between innovation and protecting intellectual property rights. A sensible middle path can be achieved through transparency. Instead of outright banning copyrighted material in training generative AI models, we can require transparency in such use. This means that developers and companies using copyrighted material must disclose the sources of their training data and obtain proper permissions. This approach not only protects the rights of copyright holders but also promotes innovation and creativity in the AI industry. It allows for the development of AI models that can generate new and unique content while respecting original creators' rights. It's great that the EU AI Act has moved to the next phase of the legislative journey, and I hope the final rules will strike a balance between protection and innovation. Let's continue to work towards a responsible and ethical use of AI. #generativeAI #copyright #transparency #innovation #EUAIAct #intellectualproperty #training #ai #data #development #creativity #tech #surveillance VisionAIres Informa IBM OpenAI
