I just saved ~$200 thanks to ChatGPT/GPT-4. I've got a massive backlog (~70 hours) of audio that I need to transcribe and analyze. Normally, I'd go with Descript (which I love for editing), but I've hit my limit for the month, and their overage rate is ~$3/hour of transcribed audio :( So I thought about using the OpenAI Whisper web API. That would end up costing about $20. Now, I'm not in a rush—I can start mining tomorrow—so I figured, hey, Whisper is open source, so why can't I figure out how to install it on my machine and do transcription locally? To be clear—I am not a programmer. I took a CS101 course in undergrad and slogged through Codecademy a decade ago, but that's the extent of my formal education. Just this afternoon, after about 10 minutes of back and forth with GPT-4, it created a python script that will transcribe all of the audio files in about 5 hours. I'm running it now and...it WORKS. Total cost by tomorrow morning? Not $200, not $20...but $0.04 for my laptop's electricity. Not too long ago, professional transcription for 70 hours of audio would have cost close to $2,000! It even optimized the script for my MacBook M1 for performance, included progress indicators in my CLI along with job estimates (hence the 5 hours), and refactored the code to make it cleaner and more readable. It walked me through installation of all the dependencies. Any time I ran into an issue, I just copied and pasted the error message into my chat, and it immediately came up with a fix and concrete next step. AI is real. It's here to stay. And I am personally in a state of shock (even though I've been tinkering with this stuff for a while) at how valuable it is, even in it's nascent "iPhone 1" phase. If you haven't gotten hands on with GPT-4 in particular, I cannot recommend highly enough paying for the $20/month Pro ChatGPT sub and getting started ASAP. #python #ai #whisper #openai
