Jadavpur University's chemical engineering department celebrates centenary ? The Department of Chemical Engineering of Jadavpur University, set up in 1921, celebrated its centenary – albeit a bit delayed due to COVID – from February 25-27, with a seminar, CHEMERVESCENCE. ? The establishment of the department, the first of its kind in India, stood out because the purpose was not just imparting scientific and technical education, but also developing entrepreneurs who could challenge the hegemony of the British. Dr. Hiralal Roy, who founded the department, took advice from Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray, to frame the syllabus. ? The chemical engineering course started with around 10 students in 1921. It was taught on different premises in and around Maniktala before shifting to Jadavpur in 1924. The present building in which it is housed came up in the early 1940s. ? When the Bengal government enacted legislation to establish Jadavpur University in 1955, the chemical engineering department – along with others – came under JU. The department now has 118 BTech seats. ? Prof. M. M. Sharma, former Director, Institute Of Chemical Technology (ICT), Mumbai was Chief Guest, while Professor Ganapati D. Yadav, Former Vice Chancellor, ICT, Guest of Honour. ? Follow Chemical Weekly page for regular industry updates ? Subscribe to Chemical Weekly magazine: https://lnkd.in/e-cmHW4 ?
