This is not just an excellent post about dealing with the emotions and logistics of a layoff, it is a must-read. Please read this and share it. There are a lot of people who have been impacted this year and are on an indescribable emotional rollercoaster.
I was laid off at the very beginning of the pandemic in March 2020. I was devastated. I questioned everything. I feared for my family. I doubted my worth. I truly thought I loved my job, and I didn't see it coming. Fast-forward to today, jobs in tech are downsizing at an unrecognizable and painful pace for many. While I have not found myself in this exact seat again, in my heart of hearts I know that it is always in the realm of possibilities. I also want to tell l you that it ended up being the best thing that EVER happened to me (in my professional life, of course). And after finding a job I ACTUALLY loved... I never looked back. Instead, I became grateful. If they hadn't cut me loose - I would not be where I am today, among colleagues I greatly admire and respect. I am not saying this to negate the feelings of anyone impacted by a layoff or to distract from the situation you may find yourself in today. I am saying this to offer encouragement, to remind you that it can and will get better, that you ARE valuable and that your tide just might be changing. Something better is on the other side, even if you feel like you're swimming upstream. Just keep going. Use your community, ask for help, offer it to others, plant seeds of kindness everywhere and as my favorite television coach always says, "Clear eyes, full hearts!" (Hint: It's Friday Night Lights) Whether you are "affected" by layoffs today or not, there is work to do and someone is looking for your talent. Here are some things I can do right now in a situation that has me feeling many feels. I challenge others to do the same. Comment below if I missed something! - Accept more connections - Reply to a DM from a Stranger - Take a chance on someone you might not otherwise - Like or comment on a post to give it more reach - Check on your coworkers - If you think highly of someone - TELL THEM WHY! - Write a LinkedIn recommendation for peers you admire - Tag them in posts of recruiters you see - Take a demo from someone trying to "sell you something" To anyone in my community, please feel free to reach out if me or my network can be beneficial to you in any way. I am happy to help in whatever way I am able. If you were impacted by the recent layoffs: I see you. I have been you. I am you. It gets better, and your community is here to rally. The only way over, is through, and you got this! My inbox is open. Here is an article that resonated with me that you might find helpful in your search for your next adventure. Choose Wisely.
