What should you know before hiring a #resume writer? A lot of people find the task of writing resumes intolerable. Fortunately, there are countless people online who offer their resume-writing services. Like any profession, there are good resume writers and there are those who — somewhat ironically — aren’t up to the job. How do you pick one who will help you get the right job? We’ll tackle these questions in an upcoming edition of #GetHired.? Tell us your tips and experiences about hiring resume writers in the comments below!
I'm planning a checklist for vetting so thank you for asking: 1) Certifications are no guarantee of quality. 40% of my business comes from rewriting resumes by people who have certifications. 2) A resume writer needs to understand how a recruiter reads resumes. I've evaluated 50k resumes in a 25 year recruiting career. A lot of them are essentially professional histories and not resumes. Before you pay a cent, send the potential resume writer 3 job postings. Ask how they would write your resume to show your qualifications for those postings. A resume is a chronology of qualifications, not a history. 3) Ask your resume writer what they know about the following: The ATS and The Hidden Job Market. There are incredibly prevalent myths about both. 4) Never, never buy a package. Make sure you speak directly to the person who will doing your resume. 5) Ask about the refund policy.
The biggest issue I see is resume writers with NO recruiting background giving out misinformation - either through ignorance or willful falsehoods. I have several articles about the ATS, resumes, and here is a recent one about conducting your due diligence for career services offerings. https://www.dhirubhai.net/pulse/career-services-caveat-emptor-kristen-fife-she-her-hers-
There are myriad resume writers out there who, while fine writers, have never been exposed to the actual hiring process. At worst, I'd hope anyone offering resume writing services has *at least* hired as a manager and had to learn what constitutes a good resume. Ideally, anyone writing resumes professionally should have experience working as a recruiter. If someone offers resume services to "beat the ATS" or career coaching to "break into the hidden job market," they haven't been recruiters and are using exaggerations or falsehoods to gain clients.
When considering hiring a resume, it is critical that one thoroughly review the person's prior work experience, i.e. - what they did for a living prior to become a professional resume writer. Unless they were in recruitment, an in it for a long time (no less than 10 years). Absent that, they really won't know how a recruiter thinks or what they look for. This kind of experience trumps any and all certifications one can claim.
Excellent topic, Get Hired by LinkedIn News! It seems as though everyone claims to be a resume writer. And you certainly could be a great resume writer. However, similar to any other profession, becoming a great resume writer takes time and practice. You also need to become an expert in human resources practices, applicant tracking systems (ATS), and resume writing best practices. You would be surprised how many atrocious resumes I have reviewed from clients who previously worked with a resume writer. My top recommendation is to find a resume writer with experience, someone you connect with and trust, and someone who has a ton of really great reviews from previous clients. Happy Job Hunting! #resumewriting
One thing to ask your resume writer is how they are staying knowledgeable about industry practices and trends. Like in many roles and industries, continuous learning is a sign that the writer is invested in getting good results for their clients.
I have no recruiting experience and have been writing resumes for years. My reviews are phenomenal. You can download a summary of many of those reviews from the "Featured" section of my profile, or my website, www.tpipllc.com. One of my clients is an acclaimed recruiter with decades of experience and many professional accolades and awards. I write the resumes and other professional documents for her clients. Here is one of her many positive comments about my work: “Awesome and thank you as always Andrew! My candidate told me as soon as she started using her new resume she got calls and responses. Whereas before nothing. You do a great job Andrew. If you ever need a reference for future clients please let me know.” My clients work in many different industries and professions. They include blue collar workers, as well as CEOs, CFOs, COOs, VPs, and other C-suite executives at Fortune 500 companies. I have helped high school graduates and PhDs. Good luck.

2 年I would only hire a resume writer or career coach who has been in recruiting for over 10 years and has worked in the industry/space/type of company that I am in or trying to be in. Period. 95% of the bad information I see on this platform comes from resume writers and career coaches who have never recruited. It is unfair to confuse people en mass in order to create demand for your service. #resumewriters #careercoaches
