What advice do you have for recent graduates entering the job market? The class of 2021 is entering a very unusual job market in the U.S. Hiring is picking up, but the labor market is still feeling the effects of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. In the next edition of #GetHired, we’ll be talking about some trends the class of 2021 should watch out for as they enter the job market. I also want to hear your advice for the graduates, though. 1. Know what you what from a job and an employer! Find a job at a company that suits you so, you won't hate waking up for it everyday. 2. Make your life easy by making a spreadsheet with all the jobs and companies you are interested in! This will help you with keeping track of where you should apply! 3. Don't lowball yourself when you start negotiating your salary. Always give a counteroffer a little bit above your target.
I'd say, don't be afraid to make mistakes at all. Those mistakes are what will build your confidence, position you for the greatness in future, and they will push you to even take much bigger risks in which lies your breakthrough. Motivate yourself first!
The best thing a college grad can have leaving his or her university is confidence. Don’t wait on one employer to make or break your entry into the job market. Send out multiple resumes and keep a log of all your outreach to help you stay organized. While you’re waiting for the right job opportunity to hit, get active by talking to other professionals in your field of interest. Have some informal conversations with them about their jobs and how they arrived at them.
My little piece of advice, never underestimate the importance of building and nurturing meaning relationships. It could kickstart your career and accelerate it faster than your certificate and skills
Be bold! You are coming into a job market no one as ever seen before. Ask for what you want and don’t be shy about the amazing projects, volunteering, or interning you did while in college. Companies want to know how you’re going to leverage that fresh innovative mind! The world is your oyster new graduates, go after: 1. The work environment you want 2. The management/leadership you want to learn from 3. The space you want to grow the most professionally Have fun in this job market and take no mess!
Dear Class of 2021, I’m going to be real with you because I wish someone had shared this with me when I graduated in 2017. The first few years post-college can be tough. You are likely going to feel overwhelmed, anxious, confused, and lost. And that’s okay. It is in fact normal. And while your classmates’ social media presence likely suggests otherwise and it looks like as if everyone has their sh*t together, trust me, they don’t. Everyone is going through a similar experience, trying to establish a new sense of identity that is not tied to being a student. After all, you have spent the vast majority of your life in school up until this point. How would you not be confused? As much as I LOVED my college experience, our academic careers don’t do a great job at preparing us to be functioning adults. I wish I could have taken an “Adulting 101” class that taught me things like “How to manage my money”, “How to land my dream job”, “How to build my personal brand”, “How to find a good mentor”, “How to maintain long-distance friendships”, etc. (that’s why I founded Femme Hive btw) And while this next chapter on your journey might seem daunting, I promise you it gets better. You don’t have to have everything figured out yet. ??
My best advice to the class of 2021 is to go for it. Take advantage of all the skills you have developed and lessons learned during these trying times. Find something and commit to being the best at it that you can be, and lastly, never stop learning.
Great thread Andrew Seaman! 1. Tell everyone (friends, family, neighbours, your grocery store checker, mail carrier, etc.) that you are looking for work and (ideally) what kind. 2. Be curious and polite with strangers who do work you find fascinating. Ask lots of questions. Make friends. 3. Don't believe everything on the Internet. (I mean...literally, estimates are that 70% of jobs aren't posted there.) The world needs you! Keep looking for the space that will allow you to contribute something meaningful and you'll find it. ?
Know your core values. They always steer us to the right people, jobs and other contexts of our lives. They will make your decisions smooth and give you peace of mind. Not to mention motivation, a healthy and long standing one. Than compare your values to the ones of the companies you target, check their "mission, vision, values" webpage. See their social media, to see if and how they truly reflect them. And then, if your values match, build your application around this. Hire or no hire, you will end up knowing yourself better, create a healthy standard for you in life to keep, but with flexible criterias that you can adapt to the market. Best of luck!
