When I gave my graduate dissertation (at 8 a.m.) the audience was yawning and bracing themselves for a data-heavy presentation. They were certainly surprised and burst out laughing when they saw my first slide was a picture of a caveman checking his social media feed. I had their attention after that. I also like to use the custom animation feature in PowerPoint to create funny paths...a nut falling from a tree onto a squirrel's head, a tumbleweed blowing across the desert. Humor delivers a shot of pleasurable dopamine to the receiver's brain, which is a nice thing to reward your audience with at unexpected moments.
