Be honest. Be yourself. That way you're far more likely to get a career that rewarding. Don't put out there a censored self that you think other people will like: you'll always be uncertian. Don't project- state your work, what you have actually done.

Nick Giffing make friends in the IT sector... talk shop with them, show them your IT competencies, get referrals. Alternatively, see about laterally transferring in your current company to the IT department (but make friends with the IT folks first). Once you're in there, it's on your resume!
