To Fight Pandemics, We Need Better #Data. This MIT Sloan Management Review article shows why poor #DataQuality is another reason we’re losing the #COVID battle. "Without good data, planners can’t plan, epidemiologists can’t model, policymakers can’t make policy, and citizens don’t trust what they’re told." Tom Redman, Tom Davenport and A Blanton Godfrey offer 4 suggestions: 1. One agency must take charge of data collection 2. Task the agency with advocating policy based on data 3. Demand that agency leadership foster a data-driven culture 4. Professionalize data management at providers of key pandemic and public health data These call for a fundamental shift in the structure, leadership, and processes across the #healthcare supply chain - stuff that enterprises find incredibly difficult to engineer. Sound recommendations nevertheless. Check out the article link in the comments. #analytics #datascience

>> 1. One agency must take charge of data collection << It astonishes me that people still advocate for such an impossible "solution." That horse is out of the barn & 3 states over... See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tower_of_Babel

No! We need civilized society, empathy and compassion, education, science, and some sort of minimally competent government.

Haven't read the article yet, but two things come to mind: 1. In the context of 'for profit' healthcare, better data benefits the profiteers. 2. In the context of COVID, if clinicians record information (i.e. create data) with precision, validity, and all of the metrics that are characteristic of 'good data' and fail to make the key distinction between 'death by COVID' and 'death with COVID' then downstream decisions won't change.

Thank you for this note Ganes Kesari. Your point, "..., stuff that enterprises find incredibly difficult to engineer," is spot on. The cost of not mustering the courage and organizational wherewithal to deal with the data issues is living with coronavirus. If that is not motivation enough, I don't know what will be. Further, as Fatima Elias, RHIA, CHFP, CPC, points out in her comments, bad data is a chronic problem, wasting money and hurting people everyday. Again, if people are okay with current results, fine. But I hope the list of those who are not satisfied continues to grow. Thanks again for the post, Ganes Kesari

To deliver the highest quality of clinical care to patients, We need better #Data. To improve the healthcare revenue cycle process and reimbursement, We need better #Data. To improve performance in value based or any other healthcare reimbursement program, We need better #Data. To ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements and reduce organizational risk exposure , We need better #Data. For optimal business performance, enhanced decision-making, and to gain the trust of those we serve, We need better #Data. Do all these, and then whether it’s COVID-19 or the next emergency, the #Data will ensure we are better prepared to survive and overcome.
