I was happy to see my Uber cab arrive. I was late for the airport and was hoping to avoid the evening traffic?? Reaching the highway, the driver unexpectedly took a U-turn. Surprised, I told him that he was in the wrong direction. With eyes on the map, he confidently asked me to stay calm. Even as I was protesting, the map refreshed & commanded him to take a U-turn?? Smiling sheepishly, he blindly followed the GPS. Yet again! I wondered how we humans have handicapped ourselves. Thanks to GPS, we lost our sense of direction. With autocorrect, our spellings are terrible. With Excel, we can't do simple math. Recommendations numb our sense of discovery. No, I've not lost trust in technology. I believe in the power of #innovation to simplify our lives. But, I wonder why we get so reliant on it and sacrifice our mental abilities. If you don't use them, you will lose them. How can we enjoy new tech like AI *and* retain blessings of human evolution? Periodically take a 'tech vacation'. Switch off your GPS once in a while. Avoid using the 'assistant', say, once a week. Like driving to the gym to keep your body fit. Put your mind on a treadmill & do stuff the old-fashioned way?? Keep your faculties alert to get more out of #technology!?? What do you think? #data #analytics
You are on dot, Ganes. While technology has improved our lives on one side it has gone to a stage where it has started dominating and has reduced many of our abilities that we used to have. Remembering phone #, asking passers by for directions to a place (without any inhibitions), approximate distance walked / run etc. The more we use our mind the better would be it’s abilities
Good one i should follow :)
“Retain blessings of human evolution” is an interesting adage! Elon Musk on the other hand is proposing a 180 degree opposite view - We already are cyborgs and should try to integrate a “digital layer” above the cortex so that humans would still retain their edge and not become slaves to intelligent-than-human machines in the future!
Well said
"Google map thappa solladhu daaaaaa" moment!
Technology is a boon many times but bane sometimes when Artificial Intelligence takes a back seat and Artificial Intervention takes over. Take a break but don’t break away from Technology...
Lyft had a bug in their mapping technology that said the music venue I was going to, was in the middle of a new tunnel recently finished in Seattle last year.
Sometimes we need to rely on our inner compass!
Spot on !!! Another example is our writing capabilities, i struggle sometimes even to put a consistent signature :)
