What can brushing our teeth teach us about data-driven decisions? It's the "habit loop". Curious? ?? In early 1900s, most people did not brush their teeth. A brilliant marketer, Claude Hopkins changed this with one campaign ? He devised the habit loop with a 3-stage process: 1. Cue - Trigger for the behavior. Ads call out the film that forms on your teeth overnight, that causes decay 2. Routine - The behavior. Brush your teeth 3. Reward - Why your brain remembers the behavior. The tingling sensation you get after brushing, equated to a ‘prettier smile’! Three weeks after this ad went live, demand for Pepsodent toothpaste exploded. Within a decade it was a global top seller! Every habit, no matter how big or small has these 3 parts. Can we use this to make #data as a habit" within the organization? Let's ideate on what are the cues and rewards for people to get a craving for data. Is the risk of bad decisions the cue, like the 'film on our teeth'? Can you think of a more pressing problem? What's the reward? #Business ROI is a lag indicator. Any quicker wins to make the brain remember, like the 'pretty smile'? Would love to hear your thoughts.
