As a leader, it is important that you ask the right questions. It's more important than trying to know all answers. Data science is an intersection of many disciplines. It is impossible to learn it all. But how do you lead organizations & teams to the pot of gold - business value? Recognize that you don’t know it all. Sincerely believe in it. Develop an ability to deal with ‘not knowing’. This is more important than whatever it is you do know. But, make sure that you ask the right questions. Learn to critique the answers you get. Be persistent until you have ‘acceptable’ ones that move you a step ahead. Figure out metrics, experiments to validate if you’re really moving ahead. Then repeat it, again & again. Until you reach the goal. I’ve spent 10 years solving business problems in data science. I know that I don’t know enough! I am intimately familiar with a few techniques. There are some I have an intuition for but don’t know internals. There a many I have no idea about, whatsoever. You will be all right if you can equip & empower your team. Ask the right questions & trust them to come up with right answers. Then, evaluate, experiment & iterate. What’s your experience dealing with ‘not knowing’ all answers? 4 年Ganes Kesari, love this post! Great insights. This part especially: "But, make sure that you ask the right questions. Learn to critique the answers you get. Be persistent until you have ‘acceptable’ ones that move you a step ahead." This is a skill that you must develop as a leader. It's more art than science. Nobody likes the annoying person in the meeting who critiques every decision. Learn how to critique and question without being confrontational. You goal as a leader is to help get to the best solution. By asking the right questions, in a constructive manner, you are advancing the progress to the best solution.
