I used to wonder how lion tamers braved the beast in a cage. I was surprised to find that they distracted the lion with a chair! Clyde Beatty was a circus entertainer famous for his 'fighting act'. He would bring the wild animal into the ring & tame it all alone. He used a whip & a chair to control the lion. Did you know that the whip was a decoy? The real job was done by the chair! When lions come face-to-face with four legs of the stool, they try to focus on all of them, at once. Confused & unable to focus, it stands there, frozen! It forgets that the real target is the person who stands safe, behind the chair. Don't we all behave like the lion? At work, there are 'many-legged chairs' dangling in front of us. Cool #analytics algorithms, interesting #data discovery tools to play with, non-priority info for users, & nice-to-have feature requests. In a rush to get it all done, we get distracted from our real target. We don't pay attention to #business problems of value. Any time you feel that you aren't making progress, picture the lion. And snap out of the frozen state. Look for business impact, feasibility & urgency. Pick a problem & make it your target. Interesting... on a lighter note I was trying to figure out if the lion tamers, who stand so safe distracting the lion, were actually scrum master or feature lead ? ;)
