I used an AI to write the abstract for my #IABC20 talk. Guess what? The AI decided to name a new CEO for... Facebook ???? Yes, this is ‘legit news’ ?? I used ai-writer that offers a free version of their AI. When you key in a headline, it writes the full article for you. I wrote the abstract for my IABC talk the old-fashioned way, and was confirmed to present this week. I was testing out this site as an example of AI in content creation. The article generated by the site claims to be 87% unique. But I was surprised to find “Nicola Mandelson” quoted as the CEO of Facebook ?? Nicola is the VP of EMEA at Facebook. Upon investigation, I found that the AI had used quotes from 6 website articles, many of them not well known. This quote was attributed to an article by Figaro Digital. True enough, the original article did make this blatant error. And, AI had replicated it. Elegantly. AI is as smart as the data it learns from. And it has this remarkable power to do things at scale. When fed with poor quality #data or dubious sources it multiplies the risk of negative impact. This is a funny example, but it could have serious implications when used elsewhere. There are four key Vs for Data: Volume, Velocity, Variety, Veracity. There is also Value, the fifth one. But that comes into play when cleaning and wrangling data or qualitative analytics. It is very tempting to ignore Veracity. All cost cuts to remove or reduce veracity from the playing field will result in flawed results. Just as a Ministry or a Financier can't audit itself independently, similarly an ai-writer can't verify the data in its backyard. As simple as that.
