Which #skills should job seekers highlight to employers during the ongoing #coronavirus pandemic? We all know that there are some soft and hard skills that are always in demand, but what should job seekers be sure to mention specific to the ongoing uncertainty? Let me know in the comments below. I'll be discussing this topic in an upcoming #GetHired. #jobsearch #hiring ??: Getty Images
Troubleshooting
Day-to-day tasks have changed due to the pandemic. Work is not immune from those changes. Simple processes may be made more complicated. Seeking out support and help with technology likely takes longer in most cases, for example. People are likely more desirable to employers if they can showcase the ability to think critically about challenges and come up with inventive and effective solutions to keep operations running smoothly.

In addition to the excellent suggestions of skills in this discussion, it will be through contacts that you distinguish yourself from other contacts. Find people at the company, through your vendors or customers who will both tell you what skills and traits are sought at the company as well as help you get in and stand out from all those applying online.
This is great but I have yet to see employers convey this in their job posts. Through my work with marginalized communities, I have seen employers demand that candidates have soft skills but have not seen employers/mgmt create assessments or recruiting processes that demonstrate this need.
I have always believed creativity, adaptability, integrity, willingness to learn, quick understanding and problem-solving to be vital skills - and truly valued by employers. And above all communication skills - in the end we all need to be able to work with others - whther within or without the organisation. The present crisis may just further emphasise that. That said - it seems that while an employer would likely spot these characteristics in a face-to-face meeting/interview...I am finding it is much harder to project in an online "zoom/tems/webex" interview, not to mention phone...... I would point out though - that the major hurdle remains, and may be getting higher and higher - to get to that interview. One gets the feeling that the preliminary filters, whether automated, or placement firms who are spread too thin - will never spot these. How to fix the system to allow these vital skills to show? I wish I had the answer......
How about we re-frame the question: which skills employers need to train their new hires for? Employers don't want to lift a finger these days..
Really appreciated this Andrew as well as the many comments and advice. Does anyone have advice on how an over 60s should approach a job application - so tough getting to first base.
High competency in technological skills. Level-headedness and resilience. The ability to see solutions to all problems without panicking. Being able to work on own initiative. Adaptability to change but also courage in instigating that change. Openness, honesty and empathy with colleagues while displaying strength to convey confidence. Accepting a slower pace: more time to think and perform tasks.

I don't believe that in this current pandemic different skills are required but more that they must be used differently. There is much more that makes you successful in a role. One thing that many companies don't know (yet) and therefore don't take into account in the hiring process is the instinctive way of taking action when striving. Our natural abilities, which are different for each of us, and the ability to apply them in our work is the key element for being successful. Our natural way of working when striving is innate and therefore won't change. Knowing your modus operandi, and being able to use it in your work will lead to greater job satisfaction and increased productivity. So, whether you are at the office or working from home when using your instinctive talents will guide you through these times of uncertainty. Together with your skills, experience, motivation, values, interests etc. All 3 parts of the mind, the cognitive, affective, and conative need to be in place. If one of them is missing, there is a big chance of failure.
