Is 2020 the year to finally go all in on that app idea you've been sitting on? I'd love to hear from software engineers who have gone indie: When did you know the time was right, how did you know your idea was good enough and what do you think might make now an especially good time (economy, strength of app markets) for software engineers to start a business around their own app or service? And if you are someone who has an app idea in waiting, I'd love to hear what things you believe need to line up before you can move forward with it. From a mile-high perspective, it is common to think that application development must first start with a great idea to fulfill some need. Also, the best indicator of whether to start a new beginning in indie application development is dependent upon a favorable documented proof of application concept/viability in the current VC market. In other words, can you make money from the app and will you go broke before you start making money? I think in 2020, we continue to see a saturated software development market primarily focused on creating application plug-ins to add functionality to the current software behemoths, SAP, Microsoft, Oracle, VMWare, Salesforce, etc. and all their child companies.

Definitely think Lean Startup & MVP.? MVP does not mean "minimum" - focus on the viable.? An app with a login screen that does nothing isn't useful.? That said, your big problem won't be getting it build - it will be the "everything else".? Specifically getting in front of the millions of people that want to use your app.? I've had tons of million-dollar ideas, though I haven't been able to break into a million phones to install my app :) . Never give up - it's a grind.? You can always do just a little bit more.? Always be promoting the idea/brand/app - podcast appearances, influencers, etc can all help with viral lift.? People want to find the next big thing - it's your job to broker the introduction.? Best wishes!

First of all I would like to thank Daniel to start such an interesting thread. The year 2020 is the? beginning of the new decade. The last decade we witnessed the rise of mobile technology. It has almost reached the saturation point. Now the focus is shifting towards wearable devices starting from watch , bracelets and smart googles. Now I see Mobile as the GUI for the IOT edge devices ranging from controlling the bulb from the mobile to getting the? temperature data on your screen.

While I haven’t had any successful apps yet. I always love building practical or impractical things just to see if people would actually use them. I share my apps on Facebook and linked in and gage if people like my post and if people check out my apps. I would probably need to figure out an idea worth pursuing and have a solid marketing plan in place to have a successful app.

Well, the prospect of becoming an independent developer would be a dream, but the unknown can be quite scary when one has dependents and one's income is what keeps everyone afloat. If one does not have to concern onself with financial security, one could pursue independent development in a heart beat. It would be interesting to work on software that companies want rewritten, perhaps because of its brittleness and/or lack of extensibility. Since the requirements would be well known, because there is a working application, the job of a developer might be to create a new design model of the application with a cleaner more modular comprehensible implementation. The developer would be a software refurbisher so to speak. The other issue is that if one is still employed full-time, how does one avoid conflicts of interest? Must one cut the cord entirely or continue in their current job and keep independent work separate . Discussing this with someone who has experience as an independent developer would be very helpful.

I need to listen to my own advice. Put something out there for free and then take the feedback and just keep refining. I’ve created apps for employers which I have published but my own apps I’ve never taken beyond a few test users. It is easy to keep putting it off to fix a few more issues and never progressing beyond that point.

I believe in the saying that you should never time the market. If the market has a need for your app, then the best timing to go primetime was yesterday.

I think for more and more of us, indie is not the best choice but the only choice. Programming is what we are compelled to do; it's what in our hearts. It seems rare to find a traditional position that is an exact fit, so why not try spending your full time on what you'd be doing in your spare time anyway?

This is just my opinion but I don’t think there is a right or wrong time to get started on your application idea. If you firmly believe that your app idea solves a social problem or is a solution to any kind of real life problems then you should just put out MVP without watching economy and work on marketing strategy. But if you consider monetizing your application idea heavily during your first release cycle then a good market research should pretty much give you an idea of when is the best time.

To have good beginnings it is good to socialize, make friends in the market, create a team. It's not just your experience. I think you need to invert your energies, your resources, and more. When you are going to start is hard but the idea is to start. Sometimes you can't do it alone. Your contacts and your friends in the market will be very useful. Another thing is if you have an idea, put it in a paper, create notes, shape boxes, write things about that. You are an artist but in technology projects. Wherever you are writing your ideas. Don't stay in the same place. You start from there.
