Hey there! How are you making room in your life for growth, for change, for learning? Because here's something I've been doing recently, and that's learning to speak, and then communicate ideas more succinctly. I'm Dominic de Souza, Tribe Storyteller. Growing up, I have been a novelist and a story writer my whole life. And one of the problems with that is you've got a big, blank page page. You want to go on forever. You want to describe a ton. You want to talk a ton, and so on. This last couple of years, I've been working with a bunch of small businesses who aren't great at writing, and who don't need or don't want a ton of copy, a ton of content on their their websites. If you're writing blogs, and you're putting out content, learning to be succinct has incredible value. People don't have a lot of time. So what are a couple of ways that you can help people immediately see that if you have a longer piece of content, it's worth their time to stick around and keep reading? Two things you can do. One is be shorter. Lots of headlines. Break up your content. Provide a little table of contents; 'here's what you're going to read about.' Provide a little summary. It's something that I try to do with most of my articles. All of the most important points that people should know are coming up in the rest of the blog post. Lead with that. Then with your website (especially), be careful on a home page to avoid a 600 word welcome letter. People don't know that there's (maybe) a ton of value in that, because when we're browsing websites, we skim. We scan, right? We're looking for words. We're looking for verbs. We're looking for keywords. You know? So give people an opportunity to actually engage with your content by making it easier for them to see what's in it. How do you do that? Break it up take ideas and and lump them together. Create bullet points. Create small headlines. Breaking stuff up does things for for the human brain. It makes it easier for us to think "Ooh, that's bolded. That's more important. That's less important." So as we're skimming pages, our eyes default to the first words at the beginnings of sentences, and then they sort of peter out as your eye travels along the end of the page. So when you're like laying out your website, make your formatting shorter. Don't make a line of text run the entire length of the screen, because your attention drops. Break it up into columns. So if you include lots of headlines throughout your copy, kind of like this demo website here as you can see it's breaking up content into bite-sized pieces. It's so much easier to read it. People feel like they're getting through it faster. And because they're seeing verbs, they're seeing nouns, it's easier to absorb. Which helps them with their engagement, and their realization: "I do need to commit to delving into more detail. If you overwhelm them, and you're not letting them know off the bat "Here's why it's valuable for you to spend the time to get into this content," then they're just going to bounce. They're not going to stick around. They'll scroll to get to the end, and then they'll leave. So number one thing for driving engagement on your content, especially if it's a longer form, provide short summaries like TL;DR (too long didn't read) kind of thing. Or break up your content with plenty of headlines. You will see a difference.
